"What does a person have to do in the county of Becker to create a housing development on a lake?" These words, uttered by developer Mark Yozamp at Tuesday's meeting of the Becker County Board of Commissioners, expressed his frustration at having his application for a change of zone and a multi-unit residential development denied by both the county's Planning & Zoning Commission and the County Board -- more than once. "This is the third time I've been denied," Yozamp pointed out.
A few months from now, local viewers of Country Music Television may see a familiar face on the cable station's video countdown. Detroit Lakes native Terry Mackner was at Bonanzaville USA on Thursday to shoot a music video for his new single, "Idaho Rodeo." The song, penned by Nashville songwriter Gabriel Farago, is Mackner's favorite on his new solo CD, "Jack Daniels," which was released independently on May 5. "I like this song the best of any off the CD," he says.
For about 40 years now, Ulen native Jean Harney has been a painter. Whether it's oils, acrylics, silk screen (a form of print making known as serigraphy) or her current favorite medium, watercolors, Harney has always loved the thrill of creating her own artwork. "I've always drawn things," she says.
Construction on the addition to the Becker County Courthouse and the new Becker County Transit building at the fairgrounds is progressing nicely, according to County Administrator Brian Berg. Despite some unanticipated delays, both projects are expected to meet their initially projected completion dates, he added. The Lake Park-Audubon School Board approved a preliminary 2007-08 revenue and expenditure budget of just under $6 million at its Monday board meeting. This past Thursday, a delegation of four representatives from the Andhra Evangelical Lutheran Church (AELC) of India was in Detroit Lakes to pay a visit to the campus of Minnesota State Community & Technical College (MSCTC). As part of their tour of the community, the group also visited with local Lutheran pastors, visited the Grace Lutheran Church Vacation Bible School, and attended a meeting of the Noon Rotary Club. The foursome was accompanied by Rolf Wangberg, bishop of the Northwest Minnesota Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), and his wife Pat.

What to do with the Swift turkey plant in Frazee has been a dilemma for Becker County and Frazee city officials alike for several years now. But on Tuesday, the Becker County Board took action to put the tax-forfeited property up for sale -- for the asking price of $500, plus fees of approximately $100. The anticipated buyer is the Frazee Economic Development Authority.
