Two weeks ago today, the Detroit Lakes Community & Cultural Center unveiled plans for a $2.5 million addition known as The Backyard. Since then, the DLCCC staff and Backyard fund-raising committee have been busy getting the word out about what the expansion will mean for the community. To give the project a jump start, the DLCCC board began its fund-raising through a "silent" campaign, quietly raising half of the estimated $2.5 million cost through private donations. According to Steve Daggett, co-chair of the fund-raising committee, everybody that they approached during the silent campa
His term may not officially begin until July 1, but Josh Hochgraber is eagerly anticipating the day when he becomes the new chairman of the board for the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. Hochgraber, who will serve as chairman-elect until current chairman Cyndi Anderson's term expires on June 30, said he sees "good times ahead" as the region appears to be pulling out of the economic downturn of the past couple of years. "The Chamber needs to be the focal point in helping to drive our members' success," he said.
Despite less than idyllic weather, Thursday's Parkfest celebration in Detroit Lakes was deemed a success by organizers. "Considering the weather, I think it went really, really well," said Parkfest committee member Amy Stoller Stearns. "I was really pleased with the booths and the variety of people that were there." "People stayed right to the end -- at 7 p.m. it was still busy," said fellow committee member Becky Mitchell. "People seemed to really enjoy being out visiting.
Every year during the third week of May, birders flock to the City of Detroit Lakes for the Festival of Birds. Now in its 13th year, the festival has proved to be a favorite for all levels of birders, from first-timers to experienced trekkers. "The 2010 theme is 'the science of birds,'" said Cleone Stewart, festival co-chair and director of tourism for the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce, which co-hosts the annual event along with the U.S.
On Tuesday, the much-anticipated feasibility study for the development of Detroit Mountain into a four-season recreation area was presented to the Becker County Board of Commissioners. "It is a feasible project," said Aaron Lauinger, who made the presentation on behalf of the Detroit Mountain Recreation Area, the non-profit organization charged with doing the study.
The week of May 3-7 was "all about sports" at St.
It's been more than 10 years since Detroit Lakes High School students began participating in the United Way Day of Caring community service project, and in all that time, the annual event has gone without a drop of rain -- until this Wednesday. "It was wet!" said LuAnn Porter, executive director of the United Way of Becker County. The wind and rain prompted both Lake Park-Audubon and Frazee-Vergas to postpone their Day of Caring projects -- but not Detroit Lakes. When Porter and DLHS Day of Caring coordinator Nikki Martinez asked the student leaders whether they wanted to postpone the ev
With one of the earliest ice-out dates ever recorded -- the ice has officially been off Detroit Lake since April 2 -- area anglers are hoping that this year's fishing opener will be better than ever. "I think we're setting up for a pretty excellent opener," said local fishing guide Brad Laabs of Detroit Lakes.
Spring is in the air.
To receive a National Council of Excellence Award from the National Association of Student Councils is a rare honor, accorded to just over 150 schools in the U.S. this year. But to receive a Gold Council of Excellence Award is even more rare, and this year, only two such honors were accorded to Minnesota schools -- both of them in Detroit Lakes. The Detroit Lakes Middle School and High School both received the Gold Council of Excellence Award from NASC for 2010.
