DLHS Business Professionals of America (BPA) members, Mercedes Jesness, Jocelyn Patnaude, Molly Tinjum, and Kaitlin McConkey traveled to Anaheim, California, to compete with over 6,000 top students from across the United States at the 53rd Annual National Leadership Conference - the pinnacle of BPA competition May 1-5.
All students scored well in their categories and faced tough competition from across the United States. Robert Blanchard, another member of the DLHS BPA chapter, was not in attendance but received an Ambassador National Torch Award for his leadership and community service. Below are their rankings for the 2019 National Leadership Conference:
• Molly Tinjum: 11th in Basic Office Systems
• Kaitlin McConkey: 25th in Human Resource Management
• Jocelyn Patnaude: 29th in ICD 10: Diagnostic Coding
• Mercedes Jesness: 38th in Intermediate Word Processing
In addition to their competition, the students listened to keynote speaker and Marketing guru, Kevin Allen talk about his life and professional experiences. He worked on ad campaigns for Mastercard, Marriott, Johnson & Johnson, and many more. His message to students was to find a career that allows you to be yourself. He also encouraged students to maintain a high level of integrity.
Additionally, students attended breakout sessions on business related topics, and visited some local attractions. The students were accompanied by their advisor Braeden Hogie.
The group thanked Detroit Lakes area businesses, community organizations, and private donors for making contributions that offset some of the travel and registration costs.
