SmartAsset, a personal finance company in New York, conducted a study to find the most tax-friendly places for retirees in every state.
They picked Detroit Lakes as the fifth most tax-friendly place for retirees in Minnesota.
SmartAsset looked at the property tax rate, the amount of income tax, sales tax and fuel tax paid; if social security was taxed; and then gave the town a retirement tax friendliness index.
Through this system, Detroit Lakes was ranked the fifth.
Grand Rapids, International Falls, Virginia and Hibbing came in ahead of DL as the top tax-friendly place for retirees in Minnesota.
