Peak bloom season is approaching at Bergeson Gardens, located on the grounds of Bergeson Nursery, three miles south and five miles east of Fertile.
“The gardens still have that fresh look to them,” said Joe Bergeson, owner, “and many annuals are just reaching their full bloom.”
Bergeson Gardens consists of over 30 large flower beds spread of several acres of grounds. The gardens are free and open to the public. Picnic tables are available, and drinks and ice cream are for sale in the gift shop. Printed guides are available to lead visitors on a self-guided tour of the numbered beds.
An open house will be held Saturday, Aug. 9. Formal tours of the gardens will be given that day, as well as two concerts by the Bergeson Family.
A local non-profit will be selling BBQ pork sandwiches prepared by Erickson’s Smokehouse of Fertile. La La Homemade Ice Cream will be for sale, along with free coffee and donuts.
A new feature this are the petunia trials, featuring a comparison trial of 56 varieties of petunia and seven varieties of hybrid zinnias. “Sometimes a simple trial with the plants lined up in rows ends up as showy as any garden bed,” said Bergeson.
The nursery and gift shop are open 8:30 am to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. However, visitors to the gardens are welcome to take the self-guided tour any time during daylight hours.
