The U.S. Census Bureau will hire about a thousand people in the Bemidji area and surrounding counties between now and spring.

Those hired will be on staff during peak times.

"This is the largest civilian mobilization of workers in the history of the United States," said regional director Dennis Johnson.

The temporary jobs offer field positions of recruiters, crew leaders, field supervisors, census takers and census clerks.

The amount of pay depends on the position and location. Work-related mileage is reimbursed.
