Thrifty White Pharmacy has made its move.
After months of construction, the pharmacy's employees held a grand opening ribbon cutting ceremony, complete with merchandise gift bags for the first 100 customers, at their new location Monday morning.
Pharmacy Operations Manager Lee Omberg says the store's new location on Highway 10 is actually a tad smaller than their Washington Square Mall location was, but that's because they have honed in on expanding what they are known for: their pharmacy.
"The pharmacy is definitely bigger," said Omberg, noting that more pick up and drop off counters allow them to service more patients at once, which he says will come in handy when filling prescriptions for the group homes and nursing homes they service - and when it gets busy, of course.
Omberg says people checking out the new store can expect to see that the health and beauty department has been condensed. They also won't offer the gifts and general merchandise they used to have on hand in the Washington Square Mall space.
Omberg says they are hoping that by having handicap accessible parking right outside and a drive-through, it will increase the convenience for customers.
"The drive through is definitely a plus," said Omberg. "It's the convenience for the elderly."
Another new feature in the new building is private consultation rooms, where people can talk one-on-one with a pharmacist or get an immunization.
"Consultation rooms for immunizations, people with special medications that maybe need a monthly injection or something - we have nurses available that we can get that lined up with a patient, and it works really well," said Omberg.
People walking by the pharmacy's old location in the mall may see there is still some merchandise inside, but the location is permanently closed down. The new Highway 10 location is now the spot for Thrifty White Pharmacy customers to get their medications.
Omberg has been with Thrifty White Pharmacy for the last 45 years, when it was at its original Detroit Lakes location on the east side of Washington Avenue. He's seen the store through both of its moves, once into the Washington Square Mall, and now into the new Highway 10 location, which he says is the way all the Thrifty White Pharmacies in the area are going.
"This is typically our prototype store that's coming out. These are the ones we're building in several different locations," said Omberg, adding that there's a store in Fergus Falls that is identical and another one set to open in Breckenridge next month. "This is our new look, our new gig."
