With the completion of the Washington Avenue construction project came a new addition to the community.

The old Washington School has become a senior living apartment building managed by Ecumen.

The building is now called "Union Central Senior Living." Owner of the market-rated housing, Bob Bristlin, said because of the increasing demand for senior housing in Detroit Lakes, the one-level construction fits the needs.

Union Central has 30 units available for those 55 and older or disabled, and so far two have been filled. The one- and two-bedroom apartments offer the opportunity for independent living, but with assistance.

"We want to create home for older adults wherever they choose to live," said Housing Manager Bonnie Mohs.

Included in the rent are all utilities except for telephone, laundry access and free Dino Mart meal deliveries. Residents may also choose to contract with Emmanuel for additional meals.

Mohs said the complex offers everything seniors look for in independent living without having to go outside -- an exercise room, group dining, free coffee and snacks, games and weekly shopping trips to local stores.

"Whatever they wanna do, I can set something up for them," she added.

Each resident will also have access to the courtyard for outdoor activities.

Because Union Central used to be Washington Elementary School, a place with history that DL residents appreciated, Mohs said she will use pictures from the school to decorate and preserve some of that history.

"I think a lot of people felt bad when Washington School closed," she said. "I think it is only proper that we honor the history of the school."

Union Central is co-owned by Wint Johnson and Roger Winter. The one-bedrooms are 540 square feet and start $995 per month. The two-bedrooms are 967 square feet and cost $1,495 per month.
