Ultima Gaming is preparing to open in October in Washington Square Mall in Detroit Lakes.

For the past three years, Ultima Gaming in Perham has attracted a loyal following of gamers young and old.

Ultima Gaming Owner David Jopp said the move comes as the store has started facing the challenges of operating in a small town.

“There’s a whole lot of days with no one in,” Jopp said. “There’s a reason stores like this are typically in large, metro areas.”

Jopp said his long-term goal was always to get larger, but that’s no longer possible to do in Perham.

The store will close in Perham on Wednesday, Sept. 4.

Moving to Detroit Lakes will bring Jopp closer to a large population center, while also quadrupling the store’s retail and gaming lounge space.

“I’ve got a vision for the store, and I’ve been at it for three years,” Jopp said. “As much as I would love to keep it here, you have to be able to do business.”

Since announcing the move Aug. 26, Jopp said the reaction has been positive, with supportive comments flooding the store's Facebook page.

“They see the upside,” Jopp said. “Of course there’s some people that are bummed about it.”
