Diego Da Costa started Detroit Lakes Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu about 16 months ago after moving from California with his wife, Jena, back to her hometown area.

He had talked to the instructors at the Detroit Lakes School of Tae Kwon Do & Kumdo, and others, and found out that no one taught jiu-jitsu here. Da Costa has been involved with the sport since he was a child, earning multiple medals, travelling to different countries, winning championships, and eventually instructing it.

Da Costa decided to start his own jiu-jitsu program here.

"I have students that do jiu-jitsu for self-defense, jiu-jitsu for sport, jiu-jitsu to compete," Da Costa said.

He started by offering classes at the Detroit Lakes School Of Tae Kwon Do & Kumdo, then in the basement of a building of Highway 10, and has now moved into the old Active Nutrition building across from M&H gas station on Washington Avenue. His 20 students, of all ages and multiple towns around the Detroit Lakes area, made the move with him.

Da Costa said the reason behind moving was to "combine with my wife (and) location." The new 1150 Washington Ave. location is in a higher-trafficked area and provided a chance for Jena and him to combine their businesses, offering Soulfull Juice and Yoga and Detroit Lakes Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu together.

Although not completely open yet, Jena's Soulfull Juice and Yoga will offer yoga classes and homemade, fresh-squeezed vegetable and fruit juice. She said that she plans to fully open this spring, but until then she takes scheduled pickup juice orders through Facebook.

Da Costa's gym has been operating out of the Washington Avenue location since July. Da Costa said that he is starting a mixed martial arts class next month with Christopher Holt, the founder of No Mercy MMA in Detroit Lakes. Da Costa has more plans for further down the line, such as returning to the previous Highway 10 location and putting "an octo-room (the MMA cage) inside of the new gym (the previous location on Highway 10). And have ... physical training," he said.
