Though it only opened up last month, there is a new phone number for Detroit Lakes' Trivia Taxi. Customers can reach the service by calling 218-325-0383.

Trivia Taxi's owner eventually aims to take it to other communities as well.

"I'm probably looking at Bemidji next," says James Sneeden, owner-operator of Trivia Taxi, which was granted its operating license by the Detroit Lakes City Council on Sept. 8 and started picking up lakes area customers the following weekend.

"It's brand new," says Sneeden of his taxi service, which currently employs one full-time driver, but could expand, depending on demand. An experienced taxi driver himself, Sneeden says he will provide backup to his drivers as needed.

"The goal in DL is to have multiple taxis," he said. "Ideally, I would like to have four taxis there; that should cover the area quite nicely."

Though it's not the first taxi service to be offered in Detroit Lakes, what makes Trivia Taxi unique, Sneeden says, is its practice of asking customers to answer a series of "fun" trivia questions — and if they get the "money question" right, they walk away with a card that will get them a free ride for their next trip. "Everyone likes a free ride," he says, "and we want our riders to have fun and continue to do business with us."

Though the service currently offers a flat rate of $10 for any ride within Detroit Lakes city limits, Sneeden says his drivers will take riders anywhere they want to go, within reason, at a cost of $2 per mile. For rides to the Hector Airport north of Fargo, he will offer a flat rate of $75. One thing to remember, he added, is that his drivers will never carry cash, and customers must pay by credit card or check.

"We do not accept cash," he said. In addition, absolutely no open beverages are allowed within the vehicle for the duration of the ride.

To book a ride, Sneeden said, customers should call 218-325-0383. At present, the taxi service's regular hours are 6 p.m. to 2:30 a.m., Thursday through Sunday, but Sneeden says they will also offer service on "off" days, by request only and dependent upon driver availability.

"I want Trivia Taxi all over the country," he said. "That is my intention. I think it's a strong concept."

A resident of Deer Creek, Sneeden says he also has a couple of other businesses that he's established there: A transportation service called All Points Transport, which offers rides to and from medical appointments; and a customized T-shirt business. For the latter, Sneeden says he has copyrighted a logo that reads, "COVID can kiss my mask," and customers can order a shirt by calling 218-402-0276.
