After starting out with one hospital partnership, Whitney Sleep Diagnostics and Consultants now works with 22 hospitals in a five-state area.
Opening in 2008, the business first began in a small office in the Graystone building but had always wanted to expand their headquarters in Detroit Lakes.
"I have heart strings here, I'm from this area," said Susan Gunwall, Director of Business and Clinical Operations. "We felt it was critical to offer the population of this area the expertise in sleep medicine."
Gunwall helped Dr. Courtney Whitney start the business that now conducts independent studies in addition to the hospital partnerships.
Dr. Whitney is a board-certified sleep physician and diplomat with a background in internal medicine.

The corporate office in DL specializes in diagnosing and treating sleep disorders independently, while the satellite locations at the various hospitals allow the business's employees to do the same all over the Midwest.
"The sleep studies are done on site at their hospitals," Gunwall said. "We brand it to be their sleep center but it's us behind the scenes."
Over the past couple of months, Whitney Sleep has been remodeling its existing locations on Washington Avenue. The center now has two sleep rooms as well as a variety of mask interface systems.
Gunwall said the additions benefit local patients so they don't have to seek treatment in metro areas.
There are more than 80 sleep disorders that diplomats and specialists are able to diagnose. Gunwall said that number may surprise some because many believe there are only the common ones such as sleep apnea and insomnia.
"A lot of training and education goes along with it," she said of diagnosing the disorders. "If you have a combination, it's prioritizing for the best outcome."
Whitney Sleep's remodeling project is almost complete. Gunwall said the some of the décor is still a work in progress but the sleep rooms are completely finished.
