It's been 40 years this month since Ryan Weum moved to Detroit Lakes and opened Weum Chiropractic, and he's seen a lot of changes in that time.

"There's a lot of things in the practice that has changed," Weum said, sharing that the handling of insurance was a big one. There's also been many changes to how they practice and the equipment they use. "As far as DL, there's a lot of changes. We got that big building right across from us here (the Midtown Development). It's a great town."

Weum and his wife moved to Detroit Lakes in 1980 because of their family connections. He had just graduated from chiropractic college the previous year and was ready to get into the business.

"My dad was a chiropractor, I worked for him for a while in Colorado," Weum said, explaining how he first became interested in chiropractic work. His uncle, who was also a chiropractor, "said this (Detroit Lakes) would be a good place to start," he said.

While it was a good place for Weum to start, it was also a good place for him to stay, as he's never left after moving here.

"We've gotten to know a lot of people in the area," he said. "It's home now."

Although none of his children followed in the footsteps of their dad and grandfather, Kelsey McBroom, one of his three kids, is the office manager for Weum Chiropractic. The only other chiropractor at the business is Sara Skadsem, who joined in 2006.

"A lot of people come in with different things and if you understand chiropractic, it helps with other things," he said. He and Skadsem work with people of all ages, newborn to 100-plus, so the problems and techniques to help vary drastically. "The best thing is just helping people with their problems."

Weum said he doesn't expect to stay in the business another 40 years, but he isn't ready to think about retirement. He loves what he does and the people he's with, so he plans to keep adjusting people's backs for at least the next five years.
