Members of the Minnesota National Guard Able Company will be marching down Washington Avenue and collecting food donations in their packs as part of Operation Hunger Resolve in Detroit Lakes on Dec. 3 at 1 p.m. The annual food donation march begins a Veterans Memorial Park, just south of Highway 10, and ends at the Becker County Food Panty.
Second Harvest Heartland reports food shelf visits so far this year are 45% higher than the same period in 2019 and 2021.
Most area residents aren’t aware of the number of individuals sleeping in their cars, or “couch surfing” (sleeping on someone else’s couch) for various periods of time, or who have little or no heat in their home.
Members of the Lake Sallie and Melissa Improvement Association presented an $11,670 donation to the Becker County Food Pantry on Oct. 6. The donation will be used to cover operating expenses, the pantry's executive director said.
A recent story on the project incorrectly stated that the county alone is donating $500,000.
“We need somebody willing to get up at 7 a.m. and go to local stores and pick up mostly bread items, maybe eggs sometimes — it’s generally under 20 pounds,” the Food Pantry director said. The volunteer, or volunteers, will drive to retailers like Central Market, Walmart and Aldi's every weekday to pick up those perishable items.
