It's almost time for kids in school districts across Minnesota to head back to the classroom, and to help local elementary students in need to prepare for the new school year, the United Way of Becker County is joining forces with lakes area organizations and businesses to host a Back to School Supply Drive this coming Tuesday, Aug. 20 at the Historic Holmes Theatre in Detroit Lakes.
Parents with kids in need of a little help in filling out their school supply lists are encouraged to contact Karol at 218-847-5628, ext. 5364 to obtain a voucher, which is required to participate in the event. Families with vouchers can come to the Holmes Theatre between 4-6 p.m. on Tuesday, register in the theater lobby and line up outside the Holmes Ballroom to fill their (donated) backpacks with school supplies including pencils, colored pencils, pens, markers, crayons, watercolor paints, notebooks and note cards, loose-leaf paper and 3-ring binders, glue sticks and bottles, scissors and more.
Participating businesses and organizations include Bremer Bank, Midwest Bank, Anytime Fitness, Sanford Health, the Salvation Army. Active Nutrition, Mahube-Otwa Community Action Partnership and Becker County.
Bremer recently donated 100 backpacks for the drive, as part of an expanded partnership with the United Way to celebrate the bank's 75th anniversary.
"In June, Bremer volunteers filled more than 5,000 backpacks with essential classroom items for children in need throughout our footprint (i.e., service area)," said Laura C. Koenig, business services associate with Bremer Bank.
One hundred of those backpacks were donated toward Tuesday's back to school drive.
"For several years we’ve been glad to partner with the United Way and we are so excited to donate these backpacks to support their critical work to help children succeed," Koenig added.
