You don’t need to be a Jaycee to enjoy the Sportmen’s Stag; you just need to be male. The event is designed to raise money for its general fund, which is used to make local donations to the community. SUMBITTED PHOTO

It’s every manly-man’s idea of a good time - the Detroit Lakes Jaycee is hosting its sixth annual Sportsmen’s Stag fundraiser. This boys’ night out is being held Friday, Oct. 17, at 6 p.m. in the Detroit Lakes Pavilion. “Tickets are already going quick,” said Jaycee Chris Larson, who is helping coordinate the event. “And we’re only selling 300 of them - last year we sold out.” The $40 tickets will get a guy into the event and into drawings for the top three door prizes. “Those are a Browning rifle, a Weatherby rifle, and a Weatherby shotgun,” said Larson. “And there will be over 50 door prizes, all sportsmen’s themed things like tree stands, ice fishing items, trail cameras…” In addition to the three guns given away at the door, the Jaycees will be raffling off or handing out through prizes 15 other guns totaling roughly $9,000. “They’ll range anywhere from $300 to over $1,100 packages,” said Larson, who says they’ll also be giving away a bear archery bow combo and cash prizes. So how does one feed the fellas at an event like this?
“We’ve got steak, mashed potatoes, corn, sweet rolls, and drinks are only a buck,” said Matt Boeke, the Detroit Lakes Jaycees president, who says he believes the Stag remains such a hot ticket in town because it’s the only fall fundraiser around the Detroit Lakes area that’s just for guys. “And we’re giving away so many guns, who doesn’t like to win a gun?” said Boeke. In addition to eating, drinking and generally being merry, the men will also be playing some games of chance that are set up around the pavilion. “We’ll have planko, a deer dart game, high/low - and drinks are cheap, that should bring them in the door,” laughed Larson. All food and door prizes for the event are being purchased from local businesses. Although in the past the Stag has had some help serving from Hooters gals, this year it will be a handful of ladies from Sickies Garage in Fargo helping out with games and serving. The Jaycee women will be running the bar. “Those are the only women allowed in, though,” said Larson. But while this may seem like a rough and tough night for burly hunters and such, make no mistake, these Jaycees are more like teddy bears. The proceeds from the event go towards the Jaycees general fund, which turns around and donates to local causes like Gifts for Kids. “That’s where we let families in need around Becker County come in around Christmas time and pick out a present for each of their kids,” said Larson, who adds they donate to a variety of causes around the community. Local announcer Tommy Ailie will be emceeing the event. Tickets can be purchased by contacting Chris Larson at 701-261-5489 or by emailing the Detroit Lakes Jaycees at dljaycees@yahoo.com.
