The winter of 1895 saw heavy snowfall in Detroit Lakes

This 1895 photo from the Becker County Museum shows a large snow pile located in front of the McCarthy Building and the Detroit Post Office on Washington Avenue.

It may seem like this winter's snowfall has been heavier than normal, but big piles of snow were not an uncommon sight in Detroit Lakes even as far back as 1895. For a look back at how Detroit Lakes residents have made winter fun over the past 150 years or so, be sure to check out the Becker County Museum's exhibit trailer down at King Isbit's Royal Courtyard and Palatial Playground during this year's Polar Fest celebration.
