Tamarac Birding Excursion: Get up with the birds and join local birder Steve Midthune for some bird identification lessons at the Tamarac Discovery Center at 8 a.m., then head out into the field to develop those skills. You'll identify at least 20 species. Binoculars and field guides are available to borrow. Bring a sack lunch and water for this 4 hour morning birding adventure. Master Gardeners Plant Sale: The University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardeners will be holding their annual plant sale in the Detroit Lakes City Park, starting at 8 a.m. and continuing until 11 a.m. (or until the plants sell out, whichever comes first). The selection will include several varieties of pollinator-friendly native plants, and there will be hands-on activities for the kids as well. The Master Gardeners will also be on hand to talk plants.
Cemetery Association Meeting: The annual meeting of the Lake Ida Cemetery association will be held at 1 p.m. on the cemetery grounds in Cormorant Township.

Wildlife Movie: A free screening of the movie, "Fabulous Frogs," will take place at 2 p.m. in the Visitor Center at Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge. Take a journey through the weird and wonderful world of frogs, shedding new light on these charismatic creatures, Witness various courtship rituals and parenting. Frogs survive the arctic winters and live in the hottest places on earth. Discover the amazing adaptations and survival techniques, making them the most successful of amphibians, in this 55-minute film. Memorial Day Parade: Detroit Lakes' veterans groups are once again banding together to host a Memorial Day Parade, starting at 10 a.m. in the Veterans Memorial Park and proceeding down Washington Avenue to the Pavilion, where there will be a program saluting local veterans. Free and open to the public.
Memorial Day Potluck: There will be a Memorial Day potluck lunch starting at noon in the Egelund Church, located 10 miles north of Detroit Lakes on Richwood Road and 4.5 miles east on County Road 26. Free will donations will be used for upkeep of the church and cemetery. Everyone is welcome to attend.
Ogema Memorial Day Cemetery Schedule: The Ogema VFW Post 9880 and its Auxiliary, along with the White Earth Veterans Association, will be gathering at the Ogema VFW Hall at 7:30 a.m., then begin making the rounds at area cemeteries in observance of Memorial Day. Lunch & Learn: Essentia Health-St. Mary's Foundation is hosting a Lunch-n-Learn discussion of "Post Cancer Rehabilitation: Rebuilding After Cancer and Chemo," presented by physical therapist Jen Frank, from 12 to 1 p.m. The presentation will focus on how to get back to your pre-cancer quality of life. It will talk about issues such as fatigue, weakness, mobility issues, pain, cognitive issues and neuropathy that many people deal with as they transition into survivorship, recovery, or living with cancer chronically. This event will be held at the Essentia Health EMS building at 225 Park Street, Detroit Lakes. This event is open to the public and admission is $5 per person. West Lake Drive Project Info Meeting: The homeowners along West Lake Drive between Legion Road and County Road 6 have requested a meeting with city and county officials at 8:30 a.m. in the Spitfire restaurant to discuss concerns regarding the street and utility improvement project set for the summer of 2020. City Administrator Kelcey Klemm, City Engineer John Pratt and County Highway Engineer Jim Olson have all been invited to attend.

Pancake Breakfast: The local Knights of Columbus will be hosting a breakfast fundraiser with a choice of pancakes or French toast, sausage and a beverage, from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Holy Rosary Parish Center, 1043 Lake Ave., Detroit Lakes. All are welcome. Admission is a free will donation, with proceeds to benefit the Ugandan Water Project.

Avenue of Flags: Oak Grove Cemetery, located just north of Detroit Lakes on Highway 59, will host its annual Avenue of Flags display over Memorial Day weekend, from approximately noon on Friday, May 24 through Monday, May 27. Stop by and see more than 600 American flags on display throughout the cemetery, flying in memory of local military veterans.
Sacred Heart Bake & Craft Sale: Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frazee will host a bake and craft sale on Saturday, May 25 from 5 to 7 p.m. and on Sunday, May 26 from 8 to 10 a.m. The sale will include homemade bread, caramel rolls, angel food cakes and many other goodies for your picnics and family get togethers, as well as handcrafted aprons, table runners, pillow cases, and many other custom items. Tuesdays in the Park: Every Tuesday from June through August, Habitat for Humanity will serve hamburgers, hot dogs, brats, beans, potato salad and beverages in the Detroit Lakes City Park from 6 to 7 p.m. Following the meal, live music begins at 7 p.m. and lasts for approximately an hour, though some performers do continue to play a little later into the evening. Bring a lawn chair or a blanket, as bench seating is limited. In case of inclement weather, both the picnic and the concert will be moved inside the Pavilion.
Detroit Lakes Area Pickleball: Open pickleball play will take place every Monday through Friday, 8:30-11 a.m., at the Detroit Lakes Community & Cultural Center. Preschool screening: Preschool screening for 3-5 year olds for the Frazee-Vergas district is provided through Becker County Community Health Services. Minnesota law requires each child attend a health and developmental screening before kindergarten.
Senior Center Activities: The DL Senior Citizens Center has activities all month long. Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. is Pinochle; at 1 p.m. there will be 500 and other games. Whist is played on Thursdays at 9:30 a.m. The third Wednesday of each month will be a celebration of birthdays for the month.
