For many years, the Water Fights have been a staple of the Northwest Water Carnival, and while participation has fluctuated a bit from year to year, the 2019 fights drew a jaw-dropping 26 teams to the Detroit Lakes City Park Wednesday night.
Sunny skies and warm temperatures also brought big crowds to enjoy not just the Water Fights, but the Junior Water Fights held earlier in the evening, and the Ice Cream Social - featuring free scoops of vanilla, chocolate and chocolate chip ice cream, served up on sugar cones, with sprinkles on top! - that took place in between the two events.
By the end of the evening, the Dion's Dangerzone Crazies team of Bobby Buhl, Sara Allen, Dalton Meyer, Heather Mitchell and Michelle Tollefson had brought home the title, and the trophy - but the Detroit Lakes Jaycees team put up a good fight, taking second place. It was the first time that a Jaycees team had made it to the championship.
The 84th Northwest Water Carnival, which is hosted annually by the Jaycees, wraps up this weekend. Look for more updates on Water Carnival events on DL-Online.com throughout the weekend, as well as the final wrap-up to be published in next Wednesday's Tribune.
