The Detroit Lakes Tribune has once again begun accepting community calendar items, for publication online and in our Wednesday print edition.

Submissions must be made at least a week in advance of the event date, in writing, to either dltribune@dlnewspapers.com or vgerdes@dlnewspapers.com.

Each submission must include the following: Date, time and location of event, whether it is recurring or a one-time happening, and where to go for more information (phone, email and/or website). Also include whether the event is free or paid admission, and how much it costs when applicable.

Minnesota Teacher of the Year Ceremony: Lake Park-Audubon's Katie Watland is a finalist for Minnesota's 2020 Teacher of the Year. The ceremony takes place at 7 p.m. on the Upper Mall of the State Capitol complex in St. Paul, with the announcement taking place between 7:30 and 8 p.m. In addition, the announcement will be broadcast live on Facebook on the Minnesota Teacher of the Year Facebook page.

Friday, August 7

Free Root Beer Floats: Ameriprise Financial Services, LLC, located at 1135 Washington Ave., Suite 103, Detroit Lakes, will be serving free root beer floats for the public from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., or until supplies last. Call 218-847-2676 for more information.

Crazy Daze: The Detroit Lakes downtown business community and Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce will be hosting Craze Daze from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Food trucks, small business vendors, and downtown retailers will be taking to the street for a day of sidewalk sales, food specials and fun. Sons of Norway: The regular monthly meeting of Sons of Norway, Vikingland Lodge 1-495 will take place at 6 p.m. in the Detroit Lakes City Park. Please bring a chair to social distance and feel free to wear a mask. Coffee will be served following the meeting. You are invited to stay for the music in the park at 7 p.m.

Tuesdays in the Park: Live music by Hoky & the Fairweathers, 7-8:30 p.m., Detroit Lakes City Park Bandshell. No cover charge; free will donations accepted. Bring a blanket or lawn chair to sit on. Masks are strongly recommended, but not required. In case of rain, this concert will be canceled.

Cruise DL Night Drive: In following with the Minnesota governor's executive order to keep events less than 250 people, there will be no traditional Cruise DL Night show — but car enthusiasts are invited to participate in a scenic drive from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Meet at the Becker County Fairgrounds parking lot. Breakfast Rotary Peach Sale: Detroit Lakes' Breakfast Rotary Club will be selling fresh peaches on Saturday. Aug. 8 and Sunday, Aug. 9 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., at two different locations: The parking lots at the new Outlet Recreation facility, also known as the old Boys and Girls Club Thrift Store, south of Highway 10 on the east edge of Detroit Lakes; and the new Boys and Girls Thrift Store, located in the old Kmart building south of Highway 10 on the west edge of Detroit Lakes. Cost is $36 for a full lug or $21 for a half lug. Sellers will be following the state's COVID-19 guidelines.

Vergas Looney Days: The community of Vergas WILL be holding their Looney Days community festival this summer, from Friday, Aug. 7 through Sunday, Aug. 9. Events will include a Beatles tribute show in Long Lake Park, a fireworks show, a loon calling contest, magic show, Puppy Plunge, classic car show, parade and water fights. Wolf Lake Harvest Festival: There will be no Harvest Festival in Wolf Lake this year. The 37th annual community festival, originally scheduled for Aug. 14-15, has been postponed until 2021.

Blues, Beer & BBQ: The Detroit Lakes Kiwanis have canceled their 2020 Blues, Beer & BBQ celebration, originally set for Saturday, Aug. 8 at Washington Park in Detroit Lakes. The 2021 celebration is set for Aug. 14.
