It may not seem possible, but Christmas Day is now less than a month and a half away — and the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce is all set to kick off the local holiday shopping season this Thursday, Nov. 19, with a new event titled "Hometown Holiday Stroll at the Lakes."
From 4 to 7 p.m., roughly 30 locations around the city will be opening their doors to welcome holiday shoppers, with Christmas light displays and decorations, in-store specials, games and holiday goodies, along with a few other surprises to entice area residents out for an evening on the town.
"We're developing a map for people to pick up at the chamber or their favorite local business," said Chamber President Carrie Johnston. "It will show all the locations, and what each one of them is doing."
Participating locations include: Leighton Broadcasting, Detroit Lakes Newspapers, Academies of Detroit Lakes High School, Achieve Therapy, Bell Bank, Lighthouse Construction, Midwest Bank, Nick Christensen State Farm Insurance, Pemberton Law Firm, Washington Square Mall, D & D Appliance., Skirting the Rules, Beautiful Junque, Becker County Museum, Becker Pet & Garden, Christopher & Banks, Design 2 Sell, Detroit Lakes Floral & Gifts, Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce, Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott, Historic Holmes Theatre, Leela & Lavender, M & H, Mainstream Boutique, Maurice's, Papa Murphy's, Red Willow; and Vintage 'N Vogue.
Some of the festivities, such as the Holmes Art Show at the Historic Holmes Theatre, will be held on multiple days, and many of the in-store holiday specials will continue through Sunday. "This night is the kickoff to a weekend of holiday fun," Johnston said.
Social distancing, crowd size limitations, masks and other pandemic-related safety protocols will be enforced throughout the evening, she added, so organizers are asking attendees to please be patient and follow the guidelines in order to make the celebration as safe as possible for everyone.
