In consideration of the extreme cold temperatures that are persisting in the lakes area and were expected to continue into this weekend, the Detroit Lakes Breakfast Rotary Club has made the decision to once again postpone the Poles 'N Holes on-ice fishing derby to Saturday, Feb. 20.
A "Kool Kites on the Lake" live kite flying demonstration that was set to take place Sunday, Feb. 14, has also been rescheduled for Feb. 20. The kite flying demo will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., while the fishing derby is set from noon to 3 p.m. Both events will be held on the ice of Little Detroit Lake.
Both events will take place near the location of the ULTRA Snowmobile Club's annual Vintage Rally & Swap Meet, which is set to be held the same day from 8 a.m. to noon on the City Beach near the Pavilion.
"There won’t be as many kite professionals (due to the date change), but it’ll still be cool," said Amy Stearns, who originally organized the kite flying demo as part of Polar Fest 2021.
"Next year, we'll go bigger," she added, referring to plans for making the kite flying event a permanent addition to Polar Fest.
Previously sold tickets will be honored
All registration for the Poles 'N Holes derby was done online and those tickets will be honored for the Feb. 20 date; as the event was sold out prior to the scheduling change, registration for the live event remains closed. There is still a virtual option, however: Those who sign up for the Poles 'N Holes Virtual Derby via the Fish Donkey app (available for free download from most online app stores) can fish from any ice-covered lake in the region, follow directions for registering their catch online, and be eligible for some great prizes.
Those signed up for both the live and virtual events can participate simultaneously, said Poles 'N Holes organizer Brent Gerber in a Feb. 10 press release announcing the date change.
