The Detroit Lakes Public Library and Lake Agassiz Regional Library celebrated LARL's 60th birthday with a lawn concert featuring local favorite Tim Eggebraaten.

Saturday began with the Fly-in and Drive-in pancake breakfast at the Detroit Lakes - Becker County Airport hosted by the Experimental Aviation Association Chapter 1498, based in Detroit Lakes.

Also on Sunday, teams of ship builders gathered near City Beach to build floatable, raceable rafts out of Syrofoam and cardboard. Teams had 20 minutes to build the most seaworthy craft possible and then one participant needed to steer the craft around a swimming buoy.

However, the afternoon belonged to the pooches. The Puppy Plunge kicked off to a packed City Beach of spectators and the dogs delivered the entertainment. Many of the dogs leapt nearly 20 feet off the edge of the dock.

Monday, July 12

The Detroit Lakes City Park, Beach and Pavilion were unusually busy on Monday night as the fourth day of the community's 85th Northwest Water Carnival brought beach soccer, a junior prince and princess pageant, tippy cup and trivia.

Tuesday, July 13

The Tug-of-War kicked up a lot of dust on the beach near the Pavilion, and the sweet sounds of Doc & the Scrubs floated over the crowd at the City Park Bandshell, as the Jaycees' Northwest Water Carnival continued Tuesday evening.

Wednesday, July 14

The 2021 Northwest Water Carnival Water Fights were a splash, in every sense of the word. Held at the Detroit Lakes City Park on Wednesday evening. The kids dueled with spray-nozzle garden hoses while the grown-ups battled with more powerful fire hoses, but the goal was the same for all ages -- to use the force of water to push a ball hanging from a wire over to the opposing team’s side.

Earlier in the day, the Great Admirals Hat Hunt was held, with local resident Roger Vizenor taking home this year's prize for finding the hat.

The evening also featured a free ice cream social and food trucks at the park. At the Holmes Theatre, Tom Petty tribute band The Heartshakers hit the stage and didn't leave until almost two hours later.
