Saturday Critter Tales: Join resident volunteer Sandi Wicklund at Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge for some fascinating personal stories about wildlife encounters during her many seasons at refuges throughout the country. Learn about wildlife viewing etiquette and find out the best places to view wildlife at Tamararc. All ages welcome. Meet at 1 p.m. by the Tamarack tree in front of the visitor center for this 45-minute program. Snellman Days: The annual Snellman Days celebration gets underway at 7 a.m. with coffee and rolls from the VFW, followed by breakfast at 7:30 a.m. inside Gethsemane Lutheran Church. Native traditional food will be served at the Hemp and Artisan Market Store booth from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the Wolf Lake VFW Auxiliary will start serving up lunch at 10:30 a.m. (their booth will be open until 4 p.m.). Bingo from 10 to 10:30 a.m. and again from 1 to 2:30 p.m., DJ Karaoke from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., rock painting from 12-3 p.m. The drawing for mayor will be at 2 p.,m., followed by a raffle drawing at 2:15.

Free Movie: A free screening of the movie "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" will take place at 10 a.m. inside Washington Square Cinema 7, Detroit Lakes. Doors and concessions open at 9:30 a.m.

Zorbaz Beer Run: The Zorbaz Beer Run returns after a two-year absence, starting at 2 p.m. Participants will run a one-mile loop, up to three times, and they can stop for beer after every loop. Knights of Columbus Breakfast: The local Knights of Columbus will be sponsoring a pancake/French toast and sausage breakfast from 8 am. to 12:30 p.m. in the Holy Rosary Parish Center, 1043 Lake Ave., Detroit Lakes. All are welcome.

Wildlife Movie: A free screening of the family-friendly, nature-themed movie, "The Civilian Conservation Corps" will be held at 2 p.m. in the Visitor Center at Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge. Celebrate Labor Day and the work of the CCC. Roosevelt’s civilian conservation corps put more than three million young men in the nation’s parks, forests, and farms. This film interweaves rich archival imagery with the personal accounts of CCC veterans to tell the story of the boldest New Deal experiments. All are welcome; run time is 60 minutes. Guided Kayak Cruise: Join up with other paddlers for an interpretive kayak cruise at 3 p.m. on North Tamarac Lake. On your journey, you’ll learn about the many uses of wetland plants as food and as traditional medicine. We’ll paddle along the wilderness area and be on the lookout for wildlife as well. Bring your own kayak and life jacket and meet at North Tamarac Lake Access. Life jackets are required.

Sustainability 101-Composting: Are you interested in learning more about composting? If you have a yard that generates almost any kind of green waste, you probably have the right ingredients and enough room to set up your own compost bin. Join Sandy Gunderson of Becker County Environmental Services at 7 p.m. for a look at different styles of composting, to help you better understand which style works for you. You will leave with a better understanding of nature’s recycling process.

Writers Group: Writers and prospective writers seeking encouragement, feedback and collaboration are welcome to join the Detroit Lakes Public Library's Writers' Group, which meets at the library at 3 p.m.

Toast to Tamarac: The final Toast to Tamarac at Richwood Winery will take place from 4 to 8 p.m., with live music; wine, beer and other beverages; games and a silent auction. Food served buffet-style from 5 to 7 p.m. Wine basket drawing takes place at 7 p.m.; need to be present to win. Tickets $40 in advance, $45 at the door and may be purchased at Central Market, Richwood Winery, from Friends of Tamarac board members or online at eventbrite.com . Ticket includes a commemorative wine glass, one complimentary beverage of choice and all other event activities. Hosted by the Friends of Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge, with proceeds to benefit the Refuge's outdoor education programming.

Beardsley Race Pasta Dinner: Join legendary runner Dick Beardsley for a special pasta dinner commemorating the 26th annual Beardsley Half Marathon in Detroit Lakes. Beardsley himself will be speaking, singing and playing guitar at the event, which starts at 6 p.m. inside Kent Freeman Arena (1130 Rossman Ave., Detroit Lakes). Tae Kwon Do Open House: The Detroit Lakes School of Tae Kwon Do and Kumdo will host a fall kickoff open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Free introductory lessons and games; open to the public.

Dementia 101: An informational session on "Dementia 101" will be presented by the Dancing Sky Area Agency on Aging at 1 p.m. in the main meeting room at the Detroit Lakes Public Library. This one-hour presentation on understanding what dementia is, how it affects families, and how you can make a difference for people touched by dementia is free and open to the public.

The Last Great Grape Stomp: Richwood Winery will be hosting its final Grape Stomp Festival from 1 to 7 p.m. Live music from Zach Thomas (afternoon) and Todd Sisson (evening); Grape Stomp starts promptly at 3:30 p.m., so come early to sign up. Tickets $15 per person (those under age 21 are admitted free), and admission includes a festival commemorative glass (while supplies last). Cost to stomp is $15 per person; two-person teams only. Paint with Nate! Nature Painting Workshop: Come to the Discovery Center at Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge at 3 p.m. for a fun nature painting workshop with Park Rapids artist Nate Luetgers. This a great activity for people of all ages and skill levels; enjoy the company of others while creating a work of art. Cost is $35, which includes all the materials needed to complete the project. Children's Book Writing Class: Detroit Lakes Public Library will host an in-person screening for "The ABCs of Writing Children’s Books," a virtual class taught by the Loft Literary Center, starting at 7 p.m. in the library's main meeting room. Do you have an idea for a children’s book? Or, have you written a children’s book but aren’t sure what your next steps are? Taught by Lisa Bolt Simmons, this is the perfect workshop for anyone interested in learning the basics of writing and publishing children’s books, including formats and how they are made. Community Connect: The Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce will host its Fall Community Connect at M State-Detroit Lakes from 8 to 9 a.m. Attendees will hear community updates from not just the Chamber, but also M State, the Becker County Museum, City of Detroit Lakes and Detroit Lakes Public Schools. North Country Trail Hike: Join the Laurentian Lakes Chapter of the North Country Trail Association for a 4.5 mile, informal hike on the North Country Trail. Meet at 9 a.m. at the 400th Ave trailhead. Have fun while getting to know other fellow hikers. This hike features a 1,000-foot puncheon across a spruce bog. Dress for the weather, bring water and a snack to enjoy this enchanting section of the North Country Trail.

Cruise DL Night: Head down to West Lake Drive along the Detroit Lakes City Beach from 4-8:30 p.m. to see a wide array of vintage vehicles, parked along both sides of the street for viewing. Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion: The 2022 Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion will take place daily on Sept. 2-5 at the WMSTR grounds in Rollag, Minn. Once you pay the admission fee, you can enjoy a full day of steam and gas engines, parades, live music, crafts, blacksmithing and threshing demonstrations and hundreds of other exhibits at no additional cost. Laddies Loppet Mountain Bike Races: Maplelag Resort in rural Callaway will be hosting the 10th race in the Minnesota Mountain Bike Series, known as Laddies Loppet, on Sept. 3-4. Competitions will be held in both the cross country (kids comp, citizen, sport, comp and elite) and short track (open men's and women's, kids comp, citizen, sport, comp and expert/elite) categories. Racing action begins on Saturday with the traditional cross country races, concluding on Sunday with the short track races. This is the 21st annual event (it was canceled in 2020).
