Thursday, July 21

Water Games at the Library: Cool down with some water games and a water obstacle course, 2 p.m. at the Detroit Lakes Public Library (1000 Washington Ave.). Swimsuits recommended. Free and open to the public.

Women Take the Mountain: All area women age 14 and up are invited to come to Detroit Mountain Recreation Area from 5-9 p.m. for a relaxing evening of wine tasting, finger foods, gourmet s'mores, scenic lift rides, yoga, sangria and snacks on the summit, live demonstrations and free samples from local business vendors. Olivia Ullrey will also be providing live music in the Ace's Wild Saloon. All tickets $10; sign up online at detroitmountain.com .

Live at the Lodge: David Ferreira (piano/vocals) and Russ Peterson (saxophone) will present an evening of live music in the Lodge on Lake Detroit's Fireside Lobby from 5 to 8 p.m.). Free admission; food and beverages available for purchase. More info at thelodgeonlakedetroit.com .

Food Truck Fridays: Hosted by Detroit Lakes Noon Rotary, Food Truck Fridays will take place every Friday through Sept. 2. Detroit Lakes City Park, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Food trucks on site may change; event will be held rain or shine.

Kicks Band Summer Park Concert: The FM Kicks Band performs live at Detroit Lakes' Washington Park at 7 p.m. Featuring vocal and instrumental music in the genres of Jazz, Funk, Blues, and Latin. Bring a lawn chair and water for maximum enjoyment; free and open to the public.

Detroit Lakes Baseball: Come out to Detroit Lakes' Washington Ballpark to see the city's new amateur baseball club play Midway at 7 p.m. Open to the public.

Tamarac "Leave It To Beavers" Program: Take an intriguing look into the world of beavers. Discover some amazing adaptations this creature has acquired over thousands of years of evolution. Learn how this large rodent played a significant role in Minnesota’s history. Meet at 7 -p.m. in the Discovery Center for the program, and then visit a nearby beaver lodge.

Marie Osmond: Singer and entertainer Marie Osmond performs live at 8 p.m. on the main stage of the Shooting Star Casino Event Center in Mahnomen. Tickets on sale at starcasino.com and 800-453-7827.

Mountain Mayhem: Detroit Mountain and Crossfit Detroit Lakes have teamed up for an all new event, "Mountain Mayhem," taking place from 8 a.m. to noon at Detroit Mountain Recreation Area. More than just a hill climb, Mountain Mayhem is a challenge requiring you to dig deep, and go beyond your limits. Athletes will have one hour to complete as many “laps” up and down Detroit Mountain as possible, climbing and descending the steep hill for the entire race; must cross lap lines at both the top and bottom of the Mountain for each lap to count. VFW Sock Hop: Detroit Lakes VFW Post 1676 will be hosting a 1950s-style sock hop with live music from Larry K, starting at 6 p.m. Costume contest

Sunday, July 24

Color Guard Breakfast: The Lake Region Veterans Color Guard will be hosting a breakfast fundraiser from 8 a.m. to noon at the American Legion Club, 810 West Lake Drive, Detroit Lakes. Suggested donation is $8 for a meal including scrambled eggs, pancakes or French toast, sausage or bacon, and coffee or orange juice. All are welcome.

Art in the Park: Detroit Lakes' City Park will host a variety of vendors marketing their creative endeavors, from jewelry and pottery to furniture and fabric goods, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. No admission fee; open to the public.

Wildlife Movie: A free screening of the family-friendly, wildlife-themed movie, "Super Hummingbirds," will be held at 2 p.m. in the Visitor Center at Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge. With high-speed camerawork and breakthrough new science, we enter the fast-paced world of hummingbirds as never before. They move faster than the eye can see, and possess natural born super powers that enable them to fly backwards, upside-down, and float in midair. For the first time, they can be seen mating, laying eggs, and raising families, in intimate detail. All are welcome; movie lasts 50 minutes.

Tamarac History Talk and Driving Tour: Take a journey into Tamarac’s past. Before the refuge was established, this landscape was extensively settled. Who were these folks? Where did they live and how did they survive in this wilderness? What role did the CCC play in refuge development? Meet at 1 p.m. in the Discovery Center for a presentation, and then drive in a caravan to several historical sites. Wear sturdy shoes and bring your stories to tell.

North Stars Water Ski Show: Come out to the Vergas City Beach and watch the North Stars Water Ski Show from 4 to 5 p.m. No admission fee; open to the public.

Monday, July 25

Anime and Manga Club: Anime and manga fans are invited to geek out over their favorite shows and stories, starting at 4 p.m. at the Detroit Lakes Public Library. A different theme is discussed at each monthly meet-up, and snacks are always available.

Tuesday, July 26

Teen Book vs. Movie Club: Area teens are invited to join a Book vs. Movie Club at 4 p.m. in the main meeting room of the Detroit Lakes Public Library, 1000 Washington Ave., for this month's Book Vs. Movie debate on "Ender's Game" by Orson Scott Card, in all of its many adaptations — book, graphic novel, TV shows, and movies. Visit larl.org or call 218-847-2168 for more information.

Tuesdays in the Park: Local singer-songwriter Tim Eggebraaten performs live as part of Detroit Lakes' Tuesdays in the Park summer concert series at 7 p.m. under the City Park Bandshell. Picnic hosted by Fuller Center for Housing starts at 5:30 p.m. Seating is limited, so bring your own blankets or chairs. Admission is a free will donation; all proceeds from the picnic benefit Fuller Center's local housing projects, while donations for the concert go to support the artists.

M State Blood Drive: Come to the commons area at Minnesota State Community and Technical College in Detroit Lakes and help save a life by donating blood between 9:30 a.m.-2:45 p.m. To schedule an appointment please contact Angie at 218-846-3780, or go online to donors.vitalant.org and use the blood drive code, "DETROITLAKES."

Open Acoustic Jam: Bring your acoustic instruments and go to the Detroit Lakes Public Library on the fourth Wednesday of every month for an unplugged jam session, starting at 5 p.m.

Thursday, July 28

Trucks and Tunes: The Detroit Lakes Noon Rotary Club is sponsoring an evening of food, fun and live music at the Detroit Lakes City Park, starting at 5 p.m. A variety of food trucks will be gathered in the parking lot until 8 p.m., serving up a host of summer favorites, while over at the bandshell, Matt Aakre will be performing. Admission is free, though the cost of food may vary from truck to truck.

Saturday, July 30

Cornhole Tournament: Detroit Lakes VFW Post 1676 will be hosting a cornhole tournament starting at 2 p.m. Cash prizes, rawings, and drink specials, including a raffle to win a set of customized cornhole boards.

Music Man Jr.: Area youth who signed up for the summer theater camp at Detroit Lakes' Historic Holmes Theatre will be presenting three live performances of "The Music Man Jr.," July 21-23 on the theater's main stage. Becker County Fair: The Becker County Fair will take place July 27-30 at the county fairgrounds in Detroit Lakes. Demolition derbies; automotive barrel racing; sand volleyball tournament; 4-H, FFA and open class exhibits in livestock, arts and crafts; free live entertainment under the big tent, carnival midway and much more. Saturday Critter Tales: Every Saturday, July 2-Sept. 3, join resident volunteer Sandi Wicklund at Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge for some fascinating personal stories about wildlife encounters during her many seasons at refuges throughout the country. Learn about wildlife viewing etiquette and find out the best places to view wildlife at Tamararc. All ages welcome. Meet at 1 p.m. by the Tamarack tree in front of the visitor center for this 45 minute program.

Wild Wednesdays: Every Wednesday through Aug. 31, Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge will be offering two sessions of "Wild Wednesdays," at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Explore the world of Nature with your child during this hour-long adventure for 3-7 year-olds. Listen to a story, go for a hike, make a craft. There's a different topic every week! Space is limited, so pre-registration required for these free programs. Lakes Area Farmers Market: The Lakes Area Farmers Market will be open every Tuesday and Saturday this summer from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Detroit Lakes' Peoples Park. All are welcome.

HR Connect: The Detroit Lakes Chamber is hosting an opportunity for human resources professionals, business owners and managers to connect, every first Thursday of the month at 8:15 a.m. at the Chamber office at 700 Summit Ave. Discuss human resource topics, share best practices and review data to help attract, retain and grow the workforce for the lakes region. Library Storytime: The Detroit Lakes Public Library offers weekly storytime sessions every Thursday at 10:30 a.m. Preschoolers and their caregivers are invited to join library staff for stories, flannel boards, finger plays, songs and more. This early literacy experience explores a different theme each week and is a way to encourage young children to enjoy reading; sometimes held outdoors during the summer months, weather permitting. Baby Bounce: Songs, stories, and action poems for infants, toddlers and their caregivers are offered every Monday at the Detroit Lakes Public Library at 10:30 a.m. Program runs about a half hour including playtime and chatting with other caregivers.
