BookEnds Online: The Wadena County Historical Society is hosting an online BookEnds presentation with Matt Goldman, New York Times bestselling author of "Carolina Moonset." Permit to Carry Class: The Sandbar in Detroit Lakes will host a Minnesota Permit to Carry class by Red Bull Firearms Training, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. This class will cover the laws pertaining to the permit as well as the basic fundamentals of marksmanship. Artist Collective Discovery Session: All artists and creators are invited to gather at the Holmes Art Cellar at 10 a.m. to brainstorm and discover what can help us shape the creative scene in our community. All makers, crafters, designers, fine artists (and not-so-fine artists), photographers, plus patrons and cheerleaders of the arts are welcome to provide input on arts in the lakes area. Abstract Painting: Artist Kara Schumann will present an abstract painting workshop, "Free Your Mind," 5 to 7 p.m. at the Holmes Art Cellar in the basement of Detroit Lakes' Historic Holmes Theatre. Attendees will learn to create a multi-layer, non-representational abstract acrylic painting on canvas.Schumann will teach you how to abandon more traditional painting techniques to employ a more intuitive approach. You will also uncover the principles of color, shape, line, texture, tone, space, and value. Class is intended for those age 16 and up; cost is $65 per person, which includes all supplies. Women Take the Mountain: Detroit Mountain Recreation Area will host a "Lucky Lass" pre-St. Patrick's Day celebration from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Tubing Chalet. Admission is $20 per person. Mini-massages, snow tubing, "Guess the Cost" wine tasting party, on-site photographer for capturing group or individual shots of the festivities, laser treatment demonstrations and offerings from Renew Med Spa, crafts and ceations from local business women, complimentary, Irish-style appetizers, and a special "Paint and Sip" event with artist Anna Lassonde (for an additional fee of $35, which includes a glass of wine and a "St. Patrick's Day Gnomes" painting to take home). Chamber Economic Development Summit: The Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce will host its 2023 Economic Development Summit, "Brick By Brick," from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Becker County Museum, 714 Summit Ave., Detroit Lakes. Presentations will begin at 8:30, with tours of the new museum building starting at 11 a.m. Keynote speaker will be Anthony Schaffhauser, northwest regional analyst with Minnesota DEED. St. Patrick's Day Dinner and Concert with Michael Monroe: Join the Detroit Lakes Community and Cultural Center's Engage program in the Midwest Bank Ballroom at the Historic Holmes Theatre for an Irish-themed dinner and concert provided by Celtic musician Michael Monroe. Lunch will include sheperd's pie, salad, bread roll, dessert bar and a beverage of your choice, served by Engage members. Irish Fundraiser: The Humane Society of the Lakes will host an Irish-themed fundraiser at the Detroit Lakes VFW from 5 to 8 p.m., with an array of silent auction, games of chance, raffles, and more, starting at 5 p.m., and live music by Bass Interference starting at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 and available at the shelter, through board members and at the door.
Acoustic Legends with Michael Monroe: Emmy Award-winning acoustic troubadour Michael Monroe and his band will present a 7:30 p.m. concert at Detroit Lakes' Historic Holmes Theatre, featuring folk legend acoustic favorites by James Taylor, Cat Stevens, Gordon Lightfoot, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Simon and Garfunkel, Carole King and more. Quilts of Valor Fundraiser: A corned beef and cabbage dinner will be served at the Dent Community Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. as a fundraiser for the Quilts of Valor program. Admission is a free will offering. There will also be a basket raffle, with tickets sold during the event. Money raised will be used for making and awarding Quilts of Valor to veterans and active duty military service personnel.
Disney Trivia: Come to the Detroit Lakes Library (1000 Washington Ave.) at 1 p.m. for an afternoon of Disney movie-themed trivia competition.
Laker Elementary Carnival: Detroit Lakes Middle School will host this year's elementary school carnival from 11 a..m. to 2 p.m. There will be food, bouncy houses, games, prizes and a silent auction! Open to the public.

St. Patrick's Day Pub Crawl: Nine local bars and restaurants — Detroit Mountain, VFW Post 1676, Northside, Brygge, Roasted, Bucks Mill Brewing, Hub 41, Lakeside and American Legion Post 15 — will host a St. Patrick's Day Pub Crawl. Those who stop in and get their passports stamped at all participating businesses and return them to Hub 41 by 11 p.m. are eligible for a prize drawing; one lucky Crawler will win $500 in cash.

Color Guard Fundraiser Breakfast: The Lake Region Veterans Color Guard will be hosting a breakfast fundraiser from 8 a.m. to noon at the American Legion Club, 810 West Lake Drive, Detroit Lakes. Suggested donation is $8 for a meal including scrambled eggs; pancakes or French toast; sausage or bacon; and coffee or orange juice. Plenty of tables, lots of space. Bring friends and family!
March Fundraising Dinner: St. Andrew's Catholic Church of Hawley will be serving up turkey with all the trimmings, including assorted salads and desserts, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Cost is $15 for adults, $5 for kids ages 6-12, and free for those of preschool age and younger, with 15% of the proceeds going to support local charities.
Becker County Town Hall Meeting: State and local government officials will participate in a town hall meeting set for 2 p.m. at Christian Fellowship Church in Detroit Lakes. Open to the public. Take this opportunity to meet and discuss current issues with state and local elected officials.

Lenten Fish Fry: The Knights of Columbus will be sponsoring a Lenten fish fry on Fridays, March 17 and 31 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frazee; and Friday, March 24 from 5-7 p.m. at the Holy Rosary Church Parish Center in Detroit Lakes. Menu will include fish, potatoes, coleslaw, baked beans, bun and dessert in Detroit Lakes; or fried fish, scalloped potatoes/French fries, green beans, coleslaw, bread and ice cream in Frazee. All proceeds return to the community; Sacred Heart's proceeds will go toward repaying the loan for the church's new roof.
St. Patrick's Party Weekend: Detroit Mountain Recreation Area will be hosting a two-day St. Patrick's celebration, March 17-18. Come hang out with us and celebrate all things green, whether you enjoy skiing, snowboarding, tubing, or none of the above! Live music, costume contests, great food, and of course, plenty of green beer on tap throughout. (Detroit Mountain is also a stop on the St. Patrick's Pub Crawl on Saturday, March 18.)
Caring Cup Grief Support: The Caring Cup, a gathering of community members who are dealing with the loss of a loved one, will meet at the David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes on the second Wednesday of every month; the Furey Funeral Home in Frazee on every third Wednesday, and West-Kjos Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes on every fourth Wednesday. Driver's License Exam Preparation: Classes for driver's license exam preparation are now being offered virtually through Lakes Area Adult Education. These classes are designed to help unlicensed adult drivers become familiar with vocabulary, signs and rules of the road so they can successfully pass the written portion of the Minnesota Driver’s License Exam. Library Storytime: The Detroit Lakes Public Library offers weekly storytime sessions every Thursday at 10:30 a.m. Preschoolers and their caregivers are invited to join library staff for stories, flannel boards, finger plays, songs and more. This early literacy experience explores a different theme each week and is a way to encourage young children to enjoy reading; sometimes held outdoors during the summer months, weather permitting.
