Minnesota-based band Collective Unconscious will be bringing their Simon and Garfunkel tribute, "Bridge Over Troubled Water," to the stage of Detroit Lakes' Historic Holmes Theatre on Saturday, May 21, 2022 at 7:30 p.m. All of the songs from the duo's iconic album will be performed, as close to the original arrangements as possible.

Becker County Republicans: The Becker County Republicans will hold their May meeting at the Sandbar II, 1150 Randolph Road, Detroit Lakes, starting at 7 p.m.

Friday, May 20

Steak Fry: The First Zinger Squadron of American Legion Post 15 will be hosting a steak fry fundraiser starting at 5 p.m. in the American Legion Club, 810 West Lake Drive, Detroit Lakes. Cost is $13 per plate; serving will continue until all the steak is gone.

Square Dancing: The Country Twirlers will host a square dance from 7:30-9:30 p.m. at the International Order of Odd Fellows Hall, 118 Holmes St. West, Detroit Lakes. Caller is Phil Miller. Cost for the dance is $5 per person. For more information call 218-849-9317.

No Mercy Fight Night: Fighting Alliance Championship 14 is coming to Detroit Lakes' Kent Freeman Arena at 6:30 p.m. (doors open at 5:30). Weigh-ins for the event will take place at the Holiday Inn Lakefront in Detroit Lakes on May 19 at 5 p.m. Tickets for event can be purchased online at .

Stamp Carving 101: At the Holmes Art Cellar (806 Summit Ave., Detroit Lakes), choose from two sessions set for 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Make an impression by carving your own stamps. Classic Film Screening: Come to the Detroit Lakes Public Library (1000 Washington Ave.) at 2 p.m. for a free screening of the classic 1952 film, "What Price Glory." James Cagney, Corinne Calvet, and Dan Dailey star in this film about the wartime romantic misadventures of Captain Flagg, commander of a company of U.S. Marines in 1918 France. This film is rated Approved and has a run time of 111 minutes. Open to the public.

Quilting: The Lakes Area Quilt Guild will hold its regular monthly meeting in the community room at the Detroit Lakes Police Dept. (807 Summit Ave). The doors open at 6 p.m., Show and Tell items displayed at 6:30, and the meeting begins at 7 p.m. We will continue learning about Hawaiian quilting. Email for more information.

Exhibit Opening Reception: An opening reception for the new artist collaboration exhibition, "Dark Summer," will be held at Vicky's Sweet Pickens, 603 U.S. Hwy. 10, Detroit Lakes, from 5-7 p.m. Featured artists will include Bryan Ziegler, Matthew Johnston, Strange Farm Girl (aka Carmen McCullough), Vanna Jordan and Vicky Carrier. Master Gardeners Plant Sale: The University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardeners will be holding their annual plant sale in the Detroit Lakes City Park, from 8-11 a.m. (or until plants sell out). The selection will include varieties of pollinator-friendly native plants, and there will be hands-on activities for the kids. The Master Gardeners will be on hand to talk plants. All are welcome.

Cookbook Signing: Visit Mainstream Boutique (833 Washington Ave., Detroit Lakes) between 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., meet Minnesota author Sara Watson, purchase your copy of her new cookbook, “Cabin Chef," and get it autographed. Open to the public.

Shady Hollow Flea Market Season Opener: Detroit Lakes' Shady Hollow Flea Market opens for the season at 6 a.m., and will be open Sunday and Monday, May 29-30, as well. Defensive Driving Class: An 8-hour, in-person defensive driving course will be held from 12:30-4:30 p.m. on both Wednesday and Thursday, May 18-19 at the ITOW (In Their Own Words) Veterans Museum, 805 W. Summer Theatre Camp Auditions: Auditions for the 2022 Holmes Summer Theater Camp will be Saturday, May 21, 9 a.m. to noon; and Monday, May 23, 5-7 p.m. Pre-registration for the camp is required; intended for kids in grades 5-12. Plant, Pest and Gardening Clinics: To help answer your questions and provide helpful ideas for your trees, shrubs, home gardens and lawns, the Becker County Extension Service hosts plant, pest and gardening clinics by the Becker County Master Gardeners every Monday (May through September) and Friday (June through August) from 9 a.m. to noon at the Extension office. Call for Artists: The Lake Region Arts Council is accepting art in all mediums from artists living in Becker, Clay, Douglas, Grant, Otter Tail, Pope, Stevens, Traverse and Wilkin counties for an upcoming exhibit.
