The Detroit Lakes Tribune accepts community calendar items for publication online and, space permitting, in our Wednesday and Sunday print editions. Acoustic Jam: Bring your acoustic instruments and go to the Detroit Lakes Public Library on the fourth Wednesday of every month for an unplugged jam session, starting at 5 p.m.

Classic Film Screening: Visit the Detroit Lakes Public Library (1000 Washington Ave.) at 2 p.m. for a free screening of the classic 1952 film, "What Price Glory." James Cagney, Corinne Calvet and Dan Dailey star in this film about the wartime romantic misadventures of Captain Flagg, commander of a company of U.S. Marines in 1918 France. This film is rated Approved and has a run time of 111 minutes. Open to the public.

Quilting: The Lakes Area Quilt Guild will hold its regular monthly meeting in the community room at the Detroit Lakes Police Dept. (807 Summit Ave). The doors open at 6 p.m., Show and Tell items displayed at 6:30, and the meeting begins at 7 p.m. We will continue learning about Hawaiian quilting. Parrot Heads Social: The Lakes Area Parrot Heads will hold a "Thursday Social" at Hub 41 in Detroit Lakes, starting at 4 p.m. Find out the latest happenings within the Parrot Heads' "phlock."

Exhibit Opening Reception: An opening reception for the new artist collaboration exhibition, "Dark Summer," will be held at Vicky's Sweet Pickens, 603 U.S. Hwy. 10, Detroit Lakes, from 5-7 p.m. Featured artists will include Bryan Ziegler, Matthew Johnston, Strange Farm Girl (aka Carmen McCullough), Vanna Jordan and Vicky Carrier. Master Gardeners Plant Sale: The University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardeners will be holding their annual plant sale in the Detroit Lakes City Park, from 8-11 a.m. (or until plants sell out). The selection will include varieties of pollinator-friendly native plants, and there will be hands-on activities for kids. The Master Gardeners will be on hand to talk plants. All are welcome.

Cookbook Signing: Visit Mainstream Boutique (833 Washington Ave., Detroit Lakes) between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., meet local chef and cookbook author Sara Watson, purchase your copy of her first cookbook, “Cabin Chef," and get it autographed. Shady Hollow Flea Market Season Opener: Detroit Lakes' Shady Hollow Flea Market opens for the season at 6 a.m., and will be open Sunday and Monday, May 29-30, as well. Double S Spring Fling: Go to Double S Arena, 24300 Co. Rd. 149, Detroit Lakes, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. (doors open at 8 a.m.), for their Spring Fling exhibitions and barrel races. Memorial Dove Release: A Memorial Day dove release will take place at 2 p.m. outside David-Donehower Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 609 U.S. Hwy. 10 East, Detroit Lakes. All are welcome.

Wildlife Movie: A free screening of the family friendly, wildlife-themed movie, "Animal Childhood," will be held at 2 p.m. in the Visitor Center at Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge. The movie is approximately 50 minutes long; all are welcome. Note to visitors — the Blackbird Wildlife Trail is now open, and several hiking trails are available for those wanting to check out the beauty of the Refuge either before or after the movie.

Memorial Day Parade and Program: Detroit Lakes' Memorial Day Parade returns after a two-year hiatus for a 10 a.m. trek from Veterans Memorial Park to the Pavilion, where a program will take place featuring keynote speaker Major Shaun Carlson of the U.S. Air Force. Detroit Lakes Mayor Matt Brenk is also scheduled to speak.

Ogema VFW/Auxiliary Cemetery Visits: The Ogema VFW, Post 9880 and its Auxiliary will be conducting Memorial Day visits to area cemeteries, starting with a 7:30 a.m. gathering at the VFW Hall in Ogema and proceeding to various area cemeteries through about noon.

Memorial Day Dinner: Egelund Church, located 10 miles north of Detroit Lakes on Richwood Road and 4.5 miles east on County Road 26, will host a Memorial Day catered dinner from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Free will donations will be used to support upkeep of the church and its cemetery. All are welcome.

Teen Book vs. Movie Club: Area teens are invited to join a Book vs. Movie Club at 4 p.m. in the main meeting room of the Detroit Lakes Public Library, 1000 Washington Ave., for this month's Book Vs. Author Visit — Will Brink: The Detroit Lakes Public Library has scheduled a free-of-charge presentation by Will Brink, author of "The Squad: Encouraging Veteran to Veteran Dialogue," at 7 p.m. in the Detroit Lakes Public Library, 1000 Washington Ave. Brink is an Army veteran who served in Vietnam. He has a master’s degree in guidance and counseling and worked in that field for many years. His concern is for veterans transitioning from military to civilian life and the veteran suicide rate. Writers Group: Writers and prospective writers seeking encouragement, feedback and collaboration are welcome to join the Detroit Lakes Public Library's Writers' Group. Outdoor Storytime: Join the staff of the Detroit Lakes Public Library (1000 Washington Ave.) out on the library's lawn and enjoy the fresh air and summer sun while listening to stories with your child, starting at 10:30 a.m. Each week, they explore different themes with stories, songs, rhymes, flannel boards, special guests and more. Storytime typically lasts for 45 minutes and is geared for children ages 3-6, although children of all ages are welcome to join the fun. Storytime will be moved inside if there is unpleasant weather. Voices of Classic Rock Concert: Mahnomen's Shooting Star Casino will welcome a trio of classic rock legends, together on stage, for an 8 p.m. concert. Voices of Classic Rock features John Payne, former lead singer of Asia; John Elefante, former lead singer of Kansas; and Fran Cosmo, former lead singer of Boston. Turf Wars Racing: The powersport drag racing event Turf Wars comes to Detroit Lakes' Becker County Fairgrounds (1310 Rossman Ave.) for a 10 a.m. start. Gates open at 6 a.m. and registration ends at 9 a.m. Racing continues until approximately 5 p.m. Competitive categories include all ages, with categories for youth and racers over 50.

Breakfast on the Farm: Farm-fresh breakfast prepared by Hawley Lions, 7 a.m. to noon at RDO in Hawley. Menu includes fresh scrambled eggs with cheese, pancakes, sausages, milk, coffee, water for a free will donation and free ice cream for dessert. Kids' pedal tractor pull at 9 a.m., corn box, Butler bounce house, barrel train rides and a farm animal zoo along with a variety of informational booths featuring farm commodity groups, all free of cost. Detroit Mountain Shakedown: Mountain bike racing returns to Detroit Mountain Recreation Area at 9 a.m., with comp, citizen, sport and elite categories for youth, men and women. Part of the Minnesota Mountain Bike Series; course length ranges from 3 to 24 miles depending on the category. Participants must register at least a half hour before the start of their race. Avenue of Flags: Local veterans and community volunteers will be setting up the Avenue of Flags at Detroit Lakes' Oak Grove Cemetery between 8 a.m.-4 p.m. on Friday, May 27. Traffic at the cemetery will be restricted during the setup, but the public can view the flags anytime throughout the weekend, as they will continue to fly until the morning after Memorial Day. There is no cost to view the flags, and all are welcome. Oak Grove Cemetery is located just off Highway 59 on the north edge of Detroit Lakes.

Street Faire at the Lakes: Detroit Lakes' 22nd Annual Street Faire at the Lakes is set for Friday and Saturday, June 3-4. Shop Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be a food court with 14 different vendors, kids' activities, an Eagles beer garden and live music playing on the Holmes Street Stage throughout both days, along with over 100 vendor booths featuring area artists' work in a variety of media. Call for Artists: The Lake Region Arts Council is accepting art in all mediums from artists living in Becker, Clay, Douglas, Grant, Otter Tail, Pope, Stevens, Traverse and Wilkin counties for an upcoming exhibit. Guest juror Tasha Kubesh will be choosing 15-20 work samples submitted by regional artists for inclusion in this prestigious showing. Deadline to submit is Friday, May 27.
