The Detroit Lakes Tribune accepts community calendar items for publication online and, space permitting, in our Wednesday and Sunday print editions. Submissions must be made at least a week in advance of the event date, in writing, to either dltribune@dlnewspapers.com or vgerdes@dlnewspapers.com. Defensive Driving Class: A 4-hour refresher, in-person Defensive Driving Class will be held from 12:30-4:30 p.m. at the ITOW (In Their Own Words) Veterans Museum, 805 W. Main, Perham. Cost is $20. To register call Denise Lillis at 218-346-3336.

Writers Group: Writers and prospective writers seeking encouragement, feedback and collaboration are welcome to join the Detroit Lakes Public Library's Writers' Group. The group meets regularly to tell their stories, share ideas and discuss writing tips. Fire Department Open House: The Detroit Lakes Fire Department will host an open house at the fire hall (417 Main St. W.) from 6-7 p.m. Free and open to the public.

Pinot for Paws Fundraiser: Spanky's Stone Hearth in rural Frazee will host a Pinot for Paws benefit for the Humane Society of the Lakes from 5:30-8 p.m. To purchase a ticket for the four-course meal with wine pairings, contact the Humane Society at 218-847-0511 between noon and 6 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, or click on the link at the website, humanesocietyofthelakes.org

Community Remembrance Service: Hospice of the Red River Valley invites community members to remember and honor those who have died through a remembrance service on Thursday, May 5 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the Hospice offices in Detroit Lakes (1111 Hwy. 10). This is a peaceful time to reflect on the loss of someone special — not a religious service, rather a time to celebrate and remember.

Fashion Show: The first annual Lakes Chic Street Fashion Show will be held at 7 p.m. inside the open retail space at Norby Flats in downtown Detroit Lakes. This show will include downtown retailers highlighting their upcoming summer collections. There is a cost to attend; each ticket will include a "swag bag" with goodies from local businesses, light appetizers, and an evening full of fashion and fun. A limited number of tickets are available from participating retailers.

Jaycees Membership Night: Are you between the ages of 18-40 and looking to get involved in the community? Join the Detroit Lakes Jaycees during their annual Membership Night, set for 6:30 p.m. in the upper level at Lakeside Tavern.

Pelican Landing Open House: The Pelican Landing Senior Living Community will host a spring open house from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tour the apartments and see all that this community has to offer for independent and assisted living, memory care and more. Trapper Education Field Day: The Cormorant Lake Sportsman's Club, 18587 Sportsman Road, Audubon, will host a Trapper Education District 3 Field Day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (or until finished). Trapper certification is a two-part process; information on the two parts can be found online at mntrappers.org . The sportsman’s club will be serving a lunch. Chili Feed: The Height of Land Sportsman Club will host a chili feed from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is a free will offering; there will be raffles and door prizes also. Open to the public.

Autism Support Group: A meeting will be held at 1 p.m. inside the Detroit Lakes Public Library (1000 Washington Ave.) for anyone who provides support to individuals with autism. The presentation will include the first-hand experience of both an adult son with autism spectrum disorder and his mother. Open discussion will follow.

Teen Writers Group: Teens interested in pursuing writing are invited to join this group from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Detroit Lakes Public Library for inspiration and support. Hand Felted and Beaded Bowls Art Class: The Holmes Art Cellar, located in the lower level of the Historic Holmes Theatre at 806 Summit Ave., Detroit Lakes, will host an art class on making hand felted and beaded bowls from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Artist Joann McFarlin is the instructor; there is a cost to attend. Curtis and Loretta in Concert: The Sons of Norway, Vikingland Lodge 1-495, will host a performance by the musical duo Curtis and Loretta at 6 p.m. in the lower level of Detroit Lakes' First Lutheran Church. There is no charge to attend.

United Way Day of Caring : The United Way of Becker County will host its annual Day of Caring in the communities of Detroit Lakes, Lake Park, Audubon, Frazee, Vergas and surrounding areas. Teams of students from these communities will rake yards, wash windows or help with any other outside projects for senior citizen, disabled or active military persons in need. Classic Movie Screening: The Detroit Lakes Public Library will host a free screening of the classic 1946 film "My Darling Clementine," starting at 2 p.m. This film is rated Approved and has a run time of 97 minutes. Open to the public.

Coin Club: Visit the Detroit Lakes Public Library at 2:30 p.m. for an exploratory meeting regarding the possibility of starting up a local coin club. Feel free to bring in any coins you have questions about, and we'll do our best to get them answered. Have coins you would like to show off? Bring those along too. Free and open to the public.

Letter Carriers Food Drive: Local members of the National Association of Letter Carriers are banding together to host the 30th annual "Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive" as part of their regular postal delivery routes. Just leave a non-perishable food donation in a bag by your mailbox and your letter carrier will do the rest.

Troubadour Concert: Fargo-based country band Troubadour performs live at Zorbaz in Detroit Lakes at 9 p.m.

Tamarac Visitor Center Opening: It's opening day at the Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge's Visitor Center. Stop by between 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Check out the exhibits, the birdfeeders, watch a movie, take a short hike and shop in the Friends of Tamarac nature store. All are welcome.

Live Music: Musician Johnny Cochran will perform live in the Mustang Lounge at Mahnomen's Shooting Star Casino, on both May 6-7 starting at 8 p.m. Open to the public.

Eyes for Mexico Geranium Fundraiser: The Detroit Lakes Lions are selling potted geraniums to benefit their Eyes for Mexico vision program. Cost is $30 for a 12-inch pot of geraniums; pre-order from any Lions member or online at detroitlakeslions.angelfire.com/geranium-sales.html . Pickup is set for 4-7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, May 5-6, and 9 a.m.-noon on Saturday, May 7. Pots will be set outside the church for purchasers to choose from.

DL Cloggers: The DL Cloggers meet to dance and socialize every Tuesday (excluding holidays) at 1 p.m. in the basement of Detroit Lakes VFW Post 1676. No prior dance experience necessary. For more information, call Ruby at 218-847-7741.

Library Art Exhibit: Local artist Fern Belling will be exhibiting her watercolor paintings in the main meeting room of the Detroit Lakes Public Library through the end of April.

HR Connect: The Detroit Lakes Chamber is hosting an opportunity for human resources professionals, business owners and managers to connect, every first Thursday of the month at 8:15 a.m. at the Chamber office at 700 Summit Ave. Discuss human resource topics, share best practices and review data to help attract, retain and grow the workforce for the lakes region. Event is free for Chamber members, $10 for non-members.

Cornerstone for Kids: Kids from preschool through high school can go to the Detroit Lakes First Baptist Church, 300 Central St. East, every Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. for a chance to learn about faith and understand God. Library Storytime: The Detroit Lakes Public Library offers weekly storytime sessions every Thursday at 10:30 a.m. Preschoolers and their caregivers are invited to join library staff for stories, flannel boards, finger plays, songs and more. Baby Bounce: Songs, stories, and action poems for infants, toddlers and their caregivers are offered every Monday at the Detroit Lakes Public Library at 10:30 a.m. Program runs about a half hour including playtime and chatting with other caregivers.
