All-Class Reunion: Bucks Mill Brewing in downtown Detroit Lakes will host an all-class reunion for Detroit Lakes-area alumni of all decades, with live music from 7 to 10 p.m.

Thursday, November 24

Thanksgiving 5K Turkey Trot: CrossFit of Detroit Lakes is hosting a 5K Turkey Trot from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Open to members and non-members. Bring your family, friends, kids and dogs! The route is on pavement. Entry fee is two non-perishable food items that will benefit the Becker County Food Pantry. Join us after for hot apple cider, coffee and donuts or muffins. All participants must sign a waiver, so please come early to do so.

Community Thanksgiving Feast: Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes will host its annual Community Thanksgiving Feast from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. There is no cost for the meal; it is Holy Rosary's gift to the community, though donations are gratefully accepted to help defer costs. Meal includes turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy and all the trimmings, along with pie for dessert. Delivery, takeout and in-person meal options are all available this year. Holy Rosary Blood Drive: A blood drive for Vitalant will be hosted by Holy Rosary School in Detroit Lakes from 9 a.m. to noon.

Dent Christmas Market: The community of Dent will host its 4th Annual Christmas Market from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Dent Community Center. More than 30 local vendors and artists will be participating. Amber Rose Photography will be offering Photos with Santa from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Food and beverages available all day. Questions? Thanks-Groovin' at Zorbaz: Detroit Lakes' own Hardwood Groove will be doing some Thanks-groovin' live at Zorbaz from 9 p.m. to midnight.

Monday, November 28

Anime and Manga Club: Anime and manga fans are invited to geek out over their favorite shows and stories, starting at 4 p.m. at the Detroit Lakes Public Library. This month's discussion will focus on fan favorite shows and the art of cosplay. Open to all area teens who are interested in joining the discussion.

Grand Parade of Lights: Santa Claus himself is expected to attend Detroit Lakes’ annual Grand Parade of Lights through downtown Detroit Lakes, starting at 5:30 p.m. There will also be a pre-party on Holmes Street starting at 5 p.m., featuring fire pits, holiday trivia, Christmas music and holiday treats. All parade events are free and open to the public.

Family Fun Night: Enjoy a night of free games, coloring and puzzle solving at the Detroit Lakes Public Library, 5 to 7:30 p.m. Fun for the whole family, though many of the activities are geared toward children ages 6-13.

Multi-day and Recurring Events

Lake Park Parade of Trees: The community of Lake Park will host its 17th Parade of Trees on three consecutive weekends, opening Thanksgiving night, Nov. 24, and continuing on Nov. 25-27, Dec. 3-4 and Dec. 10-11. More than 30 uniquely decorated trees will be on display in a new location at the corner of State Highway 10 and County Highway 5. Enjoy complimentary coffee, cider and Christmas treats while you explore, and be sure to pick up a 2022 commemorative ornament before you go. Hours will be 4-8 p.m. on Nov. 24; 10 a.m.-7 p.m. on Nov. 25-26, Dec. 3 and Dec. 10; and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Nov. 27, Dec. 4 and Dec. 11. Open to the public; a free will donation will be taken at the door, with proceeds to benefit the event's former home, the American Legion, which was destroyed by fire and is in the process of rebuilding.

Young Life Tree Sales: Lakes Area Young Life will be selling Christmas trees in the parking lot of West Lake Laundry, 802 West Lake Drive, starting Thanksgiving weekend and contining on weekends through Dec. 17 (while supplies last). Hours on Black Friday are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; regular hours will be Fridays from 4 to 7 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Photography Exhibit: The Detroit Lakes Public Library is exhibiting "A Memory of Steel," featuring the photography of W. Scott Olsen, through the end of November. The exhibit is a collection of images taken at the abandoned Fargo Foundry at 92 N.P. Ave. in Fargo, the day before the building was destroyed by fire in 2021. Olsen is an English professor at Concordia College in Moorhead, as well as the author of 12 published nonfiction books in the narrative travel and adventure category. The library is located at 1000 Washington Ave.

Off the Wall Art Exhibit: Detroit Lakes artist Cathy Oehler is among those featured in the new "Off the Wall" dimensional art exhibit at the Lake Region Arts Council Gallery in Fergus Falls, which runs through Dec. 23. Other featured artists include Penny Kagigebi of White Earth Ojibwe, Rick Kagigebi of Lac Courte Oreille, Mary Jo Wentz of Battle Lake, Vicky Radel of Norcross, Jarod Marrow of Fergus Falls, Phyllis Joos of Hancock, Judy Christoffersen of Dent, Kae Homeman of Erhard, Kristi Kruder of Battle Lake, Dar Eckert of Fergus Falls, Timothy Cassidy of New York Mills, Mary Williams of Clitherall, Brian Christensen of Fergus Falls and Carl Zachmann of Fergus Falls.

Driver's License Exam Preparation: Classes for driver's license exam preparation are now being offered virtually through Lakes Area Adult Education. These classes are designed to help unlicensed adult drivers become familiar with vocabulary, signs and rules of the road so they can successfully pass the written portion of the Minnesota Driver’s License Exam.  Classes will be held Feb. 6-March 10 on Mondays and Fridays, 5 to 6:30 p.m., with an accelerated option offered on Mondays and Fridays from March 13-March 31 (same class times). HR Connect: The Detroit Lakes Chamber is hosting an opportunity for human resources professionals, business owners and managers to connect, every first Thursday of the month at 8:15 a.m. at the Chamber office at 700 Summit Ave. Discuss human resource topics, share best practices and review data to help attract, retain and grow the workforce for the lakes region. Event is free for Chamber members, $10 for non-members.

Library Storytime: The Detroit Lakes Public Library offers weekly storytime sessions every Thursday at 10:30 a.m. Preschoolers and their caregivers are invited to join library staff for stories, flannel boards, finger plays, songs and more. This early literacy experience explores a different theme each week and is a way to encourage young children to enjoy reading; sometimes held outdoors during the summer months, weather permitting. Baby Bounce: Songs, stories, and action poems for infants, toddlers and their caregivers are offered every Monday at the Detroit Lakes Public Library at 10:30 a.m. Program runs about a half hour including playtime and chatting with other caregivers. “The last order was either a Double Papa Burger or a double bacon,” recalled employee Wendy Olson. “I’ve been working here for four or five years. At first, it (the last day) was sad, but then people kept coming in; the line grew and grew. By the end it was bittersweet.”
Wade Alfred Olds, 53, of Detroit Lakes was charged Nov. 22 in Becker County District Court with two felony criminal vehicular homicide charges involving driving while intoxicated. He is also charged with one felony count of criminal vehicular operation.
According to court records, on Sept. 29, 2021 he was arrested in the Holy Rosary Church parking lot in Detroit Lakes, after a KOPS (Keeping Our Police Safe) Alert was issued by Becker County dispatch a day earlier.
Two sedans and a deer were involved in an accident along County Highway 21, Detroit Lakes. The drivers of the sedans were 24 years old and 37 years old. Injuries were reported.
