World War II Author Presentation: Come to the Detroit Lakes Public Library for a free presentation featuring historical World War II author Paul Sailer, starting at 10:30 a.m. Sailer has been interested in WW II aviation history since childhood. He received a bacnehlor's degree in Social Studies (emphasis on American History) from Moorhead State College in 1969, and a pilot’s rating from the U.S. Army’s Advanced Flight School at Fort Rucker, Ala., in 1970. He flew UH-1 Huey and OH-58 Kiowa helicopters with the 20th Engineer Brigade in Vietnam in 1970 and 1971. He and his wife, Dianna, live on a tree farm in Wadena County. He was named 2012 Aviation Writer of the Year by the Minnesota Aviation Hall of Fame for "The Oranges are Sweet." Copies of that and his most recent book, "I Had a Comrade," will be available for sale during this event, with $5 from the proceeds of each book to be donated to the library.

Waubun Art Exhibit Opening: Paintings by contemporary Native American artist Kent Estey will be on exhibit through November and December at Circles of Faith United Church of Christ, Waubun. Estey will be giving an artist talk during the grand opening, which takes place from 6 to 8 p.m. A small selection of prints by Twin Valley artist, the late Gene Lysaker on loan from the Twin Valley Heritage Center will also be on exhibit that evening. Marine Corps Birthday Celebration: The Lakes Area Leathernecks chapter of the Marine Corps League will host a special dinner celebrating the Marine Corps' 247th birthday from 5 to 9:30 p.m. at the 59'er Diner, 19389 Hwy. 59 Frontage Road, Detroit Lakes. Glass Mosaic Workshop: The Holmes Art Cellar at Detroit Lakes' Historic Holmes Theatre will host a glass mosaic workshop with artist JoAnn McFarlin at 5 p.m. Create a stunning glass-on-glass mosaic using a variety of stained glass shards and shapes. Learn the techniques of cutting glass, color composing and tips on adhesive. Finished piece is approximately 4x6 inches. All materials provided for up to two trees. WCI Autumn Convivium: West Central Initiative will be hosting its Autumn Convivium at the Historic Holmes Theatre in Detroit Lakes from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Speakers will include Kevin Kling, a monologist, playwright, and disability advocate; Kevin Lindsey, the CEO of the Minnesota Humanities Center (MHC); and Emily Buermann, a Becker County resident and enrolled member of the White Earth Band of Ojibwe. Library Book Club: The Detroit Lakes Public Library's Book Club will meet at 3 p.m. to discuss "The Dressmaker of Khair Khana: Five Sisters, One Remarkable Family, and the Woman Who Risked Everything to Keep Them Safe," by Gayle Tzemach Lemmon, an inspiring true story about an Afghan woman who became the only breadwinner for her family. Virtual Writing Class: The Detroit Lakes Public Library will host a "watch party" for the virtual writing class, "Turning Family Stories into a Memoir," starting at 7 p.m. Taught by Gail Milstein of the Loft Literary Center, this class is intended to help aspiring writers get started on telling their family's stories. Veterans Appreciation Dinner: The Lions Clubs of Frazee, Vergas, Four Corners and Wolf Lake are co-sponsoring a veterans' appreciation dinner and Quilts of Valor presentation on Wednesday, Nov. 16 at 5 p.m. in the Frazee Event Center. Medical Care Costs Presentation: Detroit Lakes physician Dr. Robert Koshnick will be sharing his thoughts about reducing primary medical care costs at 7 p.m. in the meeting room of the Detroit Lakes Public Library (1000 Washington Ave.). In his book, "Empower-Patient Accounts Empower Patients!," Dr. Koshnick goes into detail about the past actions that have led to the present soaring medical care costs. He will present a path forward that would empower patients to pay directly for their primary medical care.

Festival of Trees: Detroit Lakes' 6th Annual Festival of Trees will take place in the ballroom at Detroit Lakes' Historic Holmes Theatre, 806 Summit Ave., from 5:30 to 7 p.m. It's a great way to start the holiday season off and the perfect opportunity to add to seasonal décor, while supporting the Lakes Crisis and Resource Center. It’s a fun event featuring a live tree auction, a silent holiday adornment auction, dinner, and games of chance. Your attendance affords LCRC the ability to serve those impacted by trauma and violence. Lakes Area Community Concert Band: The locally-based Lakes Area Community Concert Band, featuring more than 50 area musicians, will perform a free holiday concert at 4 p.m. inside the Historic Holmes Theatre, 806 Summit Ave., Detroit Lakes. Free will donations will be accepted to support the band.

Santa Photo Fundraiser: Becker Pet & Garden in Detroit Lakes will host a special Santa Photo-Time fundraiser for Humane Society of the Lakes. Come in and get your pets' and familiy's photos taken with Santa between 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. to get those Christmas cards made and support HSL. Cost is a $25 donation, for which you will receive a memory card filled with photos and a $5 gift certificate for either Becker Pet or the Candy Store.

Shrek the Musical: Detroit Lakes High School's music and theater department will present "Shrek the Musical" on Nov. 11 and 12 at 7:30 p.m., in George Simson Auditorium at Detroit Lakes Middle School. Tickets are available in advance at Central Market, or at the door, for $10 each.

Holmes Art Show: The 19th Annual Holmes Art Show is set for Nov. 10-12 at the Historic Holmes Theatre, 806 Summit Ave., Detroit Lakes. Free admission; over 30 regional artists will be featured. Photography Exhibit: The Detroit Lakes Public Library is exhibiting "A Memory of Steel," featuring the photography of W. Scott Olsen, through the end of November. The exhibit is a collection of images taken at the abandoned Fargo Foundry at 92 N.P. Ave. in Fargo, the day before the building was destroyed by fire in 2021. Olsen is an English professor at Concordia College in Moorhead, as well as the author of 12 published nonfiction books in the narrative travel and adventure category. The library is located at 1000 Washington Ave.

Off the Wall Art Exhibit: Detroit Lakes artist Cathy Oehler is among those featured in the new "Off the Wall" dimensional art exhibit at the Lake Region Arts Council Gallery in Fergus Falls, which runs through Dec. 23. Library Storytime: The Detroit Lakes Public Library offers weekly storytime sessions every Thursday at 10:30 a.m. Preschoolers and their caregivers are invited to join library staff for stories, flannel boards, finger plays, songs and more. This early literacy experience explores a different theme each week and is a way to encourage young children to enjoy reading; sometimes held outdoors during the summer months, weather permitting.
