Secrets of the Glensheen Family Murders: True crime fans are invited to come to the Detroit Lakes Public Library at 1:30 p.m. for a special presentation by reporter Joe Kimball, author of "Secrets of the Congdon Mansion," on one of Minnesota's most infamous family murder cases.

Arts Mentorship Showcase: Four Otter Tail County students are among those whose work will be exhibited at a Lake Region Arts Council Arts Mentorship Showcase, starting at 10 a.m. inside A Center for the Arts, 124 W. Lincoln Ave., Fergus Falls. Featured artists from Otter Tail County include Alexandra Grotberg, flute, mentored by Debora Harris; Sara Grotberg, violin, mentored by Sonja Bosca-Harasim; Ember Morrow, fiction, mentored by Heather Slomski; and Lola Strong, painting, mentored by Courtney Stanley. Also featured will be Tyler Herr of Grant County, who was mentored in printmaking by Michael Weatherly; Hattie Jackson, Clay County, who was mentored in trombone by Nathaniel Dickey; Gerald Lasser, Douglas County, who was mentored in ceramics by Merodie (Mimi) Seykora; David Varga, who was mentored in tap dance by Stephanie Ferrian; and Aiden Williams, Clay County, who was mentored in fiction by Vincent Reusch. All of the students will be performing or exhibiting work created during their mentorships. Open to the public.

True Life Time Capsule Reveal: Please join the True Life Assembly of God Church congregation for the unveiling of the time capsule from 1947 that was placed behind the cornerstone of the current Becker County Museum, which was previously the Detroit Lakes Assembly of God Church, starting at 6 p.m. You Must RSVP to 218-731-1722 in order to reserve your spot.

Lakes Area Electric Vehicle Event: The inaugural Lakes Area EV (Electric Vehicle) Event takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Detroit Lakes' First Lutheran Church. Representatives from four area electric utility companies will be on hand, along with local EV owners and dealers, the Prairie Woods Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America and West Central Climate Action. WCCO meteorologist and children's book author, Paul Douglas, will be presenting "A Christian Case for Climate Conversation," inside the church sanctuary at 11 a.m. There will be electric vehicles and e-bikes on hand to "test drive," along with demonstrations of electric-powered yard appliances, EV charging stations and a variety of kids' activities. Healthy and environmentally friendly snacks will be served. Free and open to the public.

Wave of Light Memorial Service: Please join in at the 4th Annual International Wave of Light Service to remember all babies that have died too soon, located at the Angel of Remembrance memorial on the campus of Essentia Health St. Mary's in Detroit Lakes. Please bring flashlights in place of candles; event starts at 7 p.m. and lasts approximately 15 minutes.

Black Diamond Event: Detroit Lakes VFW Post 1676 will host a Black Diamond Event benefiting the Detroit Lakes Ski Team, 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the club for $25, including an evening of games, food, raffle drawings and more. Need not be present to win.

Color Guard Breakfast: The Lake Region Veterans Color Guard will be hosting a breakfast fundraiser from 8 a.m. to noon at the American Legion Club, 810 West Lake Drive, Detroit Lakes. Suggested donation is $8 for a meal including scrambled eggs, pancakes or French toast, sausage or bacon, and coffee or orange juice. All are welcome.

Turkey Dinner: St. Andrew's Catholic Church of Hawley will host a turkey dinner with all the trimmings, including salads and desserts, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost is $15 for adults, $5 for kids ages 6-12 and free for all preschoolers age 5 and under. Church is located at 1418 Main St., Hawley; event is co-sponsored by Catholic United Financial Council 321 of Detroit Lakes.

Canceled-Lund Lutheran Meatball Dinner: A meatball dinner that was scheduled to take place from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Lund Lutheran Church in rural Detroit Lakes has been canceled for this year.

Figure Skating Information Meeting: The Lakes Figure Skating Club will host an informational meeting for parents of children who are past, current or hopeful future members, starting at 5 p.m. in Kent Freeman Arena, Detroit Lakes.

Artist Talk: Come to the Detroit Lakes Public Library at 6:30 p.m. for an artist talk by W. Scott Olsen, who is exhibiting his photography at the library through the end of November. Olsen, a professor of English at Concordia College in Moorhead and author of 12 published nonfiction books in the narrative travel and adventure category, will discuss street photography and his exhibit, "A Memory of Steel," a collection of images taken at the abandoned Fargo Foundry in Fargo the day before the building was destroyed by fire.

Women Take the Mountain: All area women age 14 and up are invited to come to Detroit Mountain Recreation Area from 5-9 p.m. for a relaxing evening of wine and food sampling, vendor booths offering free samples and services, live music and much more. Peggy Schons Benefit: Holy Rosary Catholic School will host a benefit for local resident Peggy Schons, who is battling lymphoma, from 12 to 3 p.m. in the school gymnasium at 1043 Lake Ave., Detroit Lakes. Live music, silent auction, food and fellowship, with proceeds to help support Schons and her family in their fight against cancer.

Anime and Manga Club: Anime and manga fans are invited to geek out over their favorite shows and stories, starting at 4 p.m. at the Detroit Lakes Public Library. This month's discussion will focus on monster anime — vampires, slimes, ogres, mummies and more! Learn more about series like Trinity Blood and Tokyo Ghoul as well. Open to all area teens who are interested in joining the discussion.

Dream Catcher Workshop: Join artist Christy Goulet at the Detroit Lakes Library for a 7 p.m. workshop bringing the artistry of creating dream catchers to life. Offered free-of-charge, the library invites the community to learn about the traditions around dream catchers and the materials used to create them. Participants will be guided in using traditional materials, such as willow and sinew, to create their own dream catcher. Christy Goulet is an artist and tribally enrolled member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa. This program is made possible in part thanks to funding from the Minnesota Arts & Cultural Heritage Fund. Library Club: The Detroit Lakes Library Club will host a 2 p.m. presentation by local resident Dennis Lange about his trip to the Camino de Santiago, known in English as the Way of St. James. This network of pilgrims' ways or pilgrimages leading to the shrine of the apostle Saint James the Great is located in the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia in northwestern Spain, where tradition holds that the remains of the apostle are buried. Following his presentation, stay for refreshments and conversation. Free and open to all! 

Family Fun Night: Families are invited to come to the Detroit Lakes Public Library at 5 p.m. for a 90-minute Family Fun Night, where participants will make a monster-themed craft to take home. Make your own Halloween monster, try out some origami, and color some Halloween-themed scenes at the Detroit Lakes Public Library. Supplies available on a first come basis. This program is appropriate for ages 6 and older.

Creative Writing Virtual Workshop: The Detroit Lakes Public Library will host a 7 p.m. "watch party" for a Creative Writing Sampler virtual class, taught by The Loft Literary Center's Gail Milstein. Participants will sample poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction, then explore craft techniques common to all three and experiment with each type through creative writing exercises. Free and open to the public. No registration is required.

Library Board Meeting: The Detroit Lakes Public Library board meets in the library's main meeting room, 4:30 to 6 p.m. Meetings are open to the public.

Open Acoustic Jam: Bring your acoustic instruments to the Detroit Lakes Public Library for an unplugged jam session, starting at 5 p.m. All experience levels are welcome to this supportive and family-friendly event. Free and open to the public.

Live Music: Tristan Tritt, oldest son of country legend Travis Tritt, performs live at Shooting Star Casino's Mustang Lounge, Oct. 15 at 8 p.m.; local singer, songwriter and musician Terry Mackner will present a special three-hour homecoming show at the Detroit Lakes American Legion, Oct. 15 at 8 p.m.; Mike Hokanson performs live at Eagles Aerie 2342, 112 Holmes St. West, Detroit Lakes, Oct. 21 from 7 to 10 p.m.; Stella performs live at Zorbaz in Detroit Lakes, Oct. 22 at 9 p.m. Open to the public.

Haunted House: The Becker County Museum is hosting its third-annual Halloween Haunted House, Oct. 21-22 and Oct. 27-29 at the county fairgrounds in Detroit Lakes. Not intended for younger children, this haunted house will bring participants an experience inspired by some of the classic Halloween thrillers. CineMagic Washington Square 7 will also provide a limited number of popcorn buckets be handed out each evening for you to refill at your next trip to the movies. Admission is $10 cash at the door. Tour groups are limited to five people or less; larger groups will be split up to take the tour. Costumes are permitted, but masks must be removed prior to entering the haunted house.

Photography Exhibit: The Detroit Lakes Public Library is exhibiting "A Memory of Steel," featuring the photography of W. Scott Olsen, through the end of November. The exhibit is a collection of images taken at the abandoned Fargo Foundry at 92 N.P. Ave. in Fargo, the day before the building was destroyed by fire in 2021. Olsen is an English professor at Concordia College in Moorhead, as well as the author of 12 published nonfiction books in the narrative travel and adventure category. The library is located at 1000 Washington Ave.

Off the Wall Art Exhibit: Detroit Lakes artist Cathy Oehler is among those featured in the new "Off the Wall" dimensional art exhibit at the Lake Region Arts Council Gallery in Fergus Falls, which runs through Dec. 23. Other featured artists include Penny Kagigebi of White Earth Ojibwe, Rick Kagigebi of Lac Courte Oreille, Mary Jo Wentz of Battle Lake, Vicky Radel of Norcross, Jarod Marrow of Fergus Falls, Phyllis Joos of Hancock, Judy Christoffersen of Dent, Kae Homeman of Erhard, Kristi Kruder of Battle Lake, Dar Eckert of Fergus Falls, Timothy Cassidy of New York Mills, Mary Williams of Clitherall, Brian Christensen of Fergus Falls and Carl Zachmann of Fergus Falls.
