"Spooktacular" Flu Event: Essentia Health St. Mary's in Detroit Lakes will host a Halloween-themed flu shot event from 9 a.m. to noon on the clinic's first floor, with games and prizes for kids age 6 and up who receive their flu vaccine. Costumes encouraged, but not required. The clinic is located at 1027 Washington Ave., Detroit Lakes. All are welcome.

Adoptive Moms Retreat: A retreat for parents of adopted children will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Christian Fellowship Church, 28048 Meadow Drive, Detroit Lakes. Keynote speaker Sarah How will speak on "Finding Strength for the Journey," and lunch, snacks and informational materials, including How's interactive workbook, are provided as part of the all-inclusive $50-per-person fee. Frazee Craft and Vendor Show: The 43rd annual Frazee Craft & Vendor Show will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Frazee Elementary School. More than 60 booths will be on site, with lunch available all day. Hosted by the Frazee Lions Club.

Halloween Hoot: Detroit Lakes' Washington Square Mall will host a Halloween Hoot party for kids from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Kids are encouraged to wear their costumes while enjoying the free games and activities.

NYM Halloween Party: The New York Mills Regional Cultural Center will host a Halloween Party for kids age 10 and younger, 12-3 p.m. There will be games, crafts and treats. Costumes are encouraged for this free event.

Halloween Pub Crawl: Five Detroit Lakes bars and restaurants will participate in this year's Halloween Pub Crawl, which takes place all day long. Just pick up a passport at one of the five locations — Brygge, Roasted, Hub 41, Lakeside Tavern or the American Legion Club — and have it punched at each location for a chance to win a drawing for $500 cash. Drawing will take place at 11 p.m. in Hub 41.

Zorbaz Halloween: Detroit Lakes' Zorbaz will host a Halloween party from 9 p.m. to midnight, with DJ Pretty Ricky spinning tunes until 11:55 p.m.

Halloween Costume Contest: Detroit Lakes' Holiday Inn Lakefront will host a Halloween party and costume contest, starting at 8 p.m. Cash prizes will be awarded at 11:30 p.m.

Sunday, October 30

United Methodist Trunk or Treat: The congregation of Detroit Lakes United Methodist Church will host a Trunk or Treat event from 3 to 5 p.m. in the church parking lot (885 Pembina Trail). Kid-friendly and fun for all ages. Visit dlumc.org for more information.

Bethlehem Lutheran Trunk or Treat: Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 210 E. Maple Ave., Frazee, will host a trunk or treat event from 4 to 6 p.m. Trunk sponsors and treat donations are still being sought; contact Madi Aeikens at 701-238-5222 or send an email to madiaeikens@gmail.com for more information.

Audubon Trunk or Treat: Team Industries is hosting a Trunk or Treat event at 500 Robin St., Audubon, 4-7 p.m. Kids are encouraged to dress up and stop by to enjoy trick or treating at several decorated "trunk stops." Games and food will also be provided.

Four Corners Trunk or Treat: The Four Corners Lions Club is hosting a Trunk or Treat at Lakes Corner Liquor, 18097 Co. Hwy. 29, Detroit Lakes, 3-6 p.m. In addition to treats being handed out, hot dogs and other fun will be offered. The Four Corners Lions Club requests those who attend bring a Thanksgiving food item for the Becker County Food Pantry.

Monday, October 31

Halloween Scavenger Hunt: The Detroit Lakes Public Library, 1000 Washington Ave., will host a Halloween scavenger hunt starting at 9 a.m. Beloved book characters will be hidden in costumes around the library. Those who find all the characters will win a prize.

Fall Fest: Community Alliance Church, 408 Elm St. West, Detroit Lakes, will host a fall festival from 5:30 to 7 p.m. This free, indoor family celebration will include games, activities, snacks, prizes and fun for all. Costumes (non-scary only, please) are welcome.

Callaway Trunk or Treat: The annual Trunk or Treat at Niijii Radio, 607 Main Ave., Callaway, will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Trunks will be set up, chili and fry bread will be served along with music for all to enjoy.

Halloween Boo Bash: The Frazee Event Center in Frazee will host a Halloween Boo Bash from 4 to 7 p.m., with free games and treats along with a pulled pork sandwich dinner for a free will offering.

Frazee Trick or Treat Parade: Area kids are invited to line up in their costumes, starting at 5 p.m. in front of the Frazee Elementary School on Hickory Avenue, then join the parade march beginning at 5:30 p.m. The parade route is dependent on whether construction is completed at the Lake Street and Main Avenue intersection.

Diamond Willow Trunk or Treat: Diamond Willow Assisted Living in Detroit Lakes will host a Halloween Trunk or Treat starting at 4 p.m.

New York Mills Trunk or Treat: A trunk or treat event will be held at the New York Mills City Center, 118 N. Main Ave., from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. All are welcome to enjoy some family-friendly fun and Halloween treats.

Perham Trunk or Treat: A Trunk or Treat event will be held at United Community Bank, 301 W. Main St., Perham from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The bank is partnering with area businesses to offer plenty of on-site trick or treating.

Vergas Halloween Party: The Vergas Lions are sponsoring a Halloween Party at the Vergas Event Center from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. There will be fun games for the kids to play.

Tuesday, November 1

Welcome to Detroit Lakes: The Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce, 700 Summit Ave., will host a free "Welcome to Detroit Lakes" event for new and returning local residents at 4 p.m. Learn about events, resources and information you can use to help "get connected" with the community.

Wednesday, November 2

Writers Group: Writers and prospective writers seeking encouragement, feedback and collaboration are welcome to join the Detroit Lakes Public Library's Writers' Group, which meets at the library at 3 p.m.

Sustainability 101: Sandy Gunderson from Becker County Environmental Services will give a free presentation on creative reuse, highlighting the holidays, starting at 7 p.m. in the Detroit Lakes Public Library, 1000 Washington Ave. Open to the public.

Thursday, November 3

Defensive Driving Class: A 4-hour refresher, in-person Defensive Driving Class will be held from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the ITOW (In Their Own Words) Veterans Museum, 805 W. Main, Perham. Cost is $20. To register please call Denise Lillis at 218-346-3336.

After Hours Book Club: Bucks Mill Brewing in Detroit Lakes will host an After-Hours Book Club from 7 to 8 p.m. The subject of this month's discussion is “Fuzz: When Nature Breaks the Law” by Mary Roach, which is about what happens when wild creatures break human laws, such as jaywalking. Monster Drawing Class Watch Party: Come to the Detroit Lakes Public Library, 1000 Washington Ave., at 6:30 p.m. for an in-person opportunity to participate in an online Monster Drawing class featuring award-winning cartoonist Rick Stromoski, who will show you how to draw Minnesotan monsters, creatures, goblins, ghosts and all things spooky. Harvest Market Shops: Detroit Lakes' Washington Square Mall will host a Harvest Market event featuring a variety of art, craft and vendor booths from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with door prizes and more.

Free Movie: Detroit Lakes' Washington Square Cinemagic 7 Theatres will host a free screening of the movie "Despicable Me 2" at 10 a.m. Doors and concessions open at 9:30 a.m. Open to the public.

Knights of Columbus Breakfast: The local Knights of Columbus will be sponsoring a pancake/French toast and sausage breakfast from 8 am. to 12:30 p.m. in the Holy Rosary Parish Center, 1043 Lake Ave., Detroit Lakes. All are welcome.

Teen Writers Group: Teens interested in pursuing writing are invited to join this group at 4 p.m. for inspiration and support. Grab a snack, do a writing prompt, learn writing tips, and hear feedback from your peers. Group meets at the Detroit Lakes Public Library, 1000 Washington Ave. All area teens are welcome.

Concordia Duo Concert: Detroit Lakes' Historic Holmes Theatre will host a 7 p.m. concert by The Concordia Duo — aka Concordia College music professors Jay Hershberger on piano and Gregory Hamilton on the cello. They will perform selections from Myaskosvky, Beethoven and Chausson. Tickets are $15 for adults, $7.50 for students. Women's EDGE Speaker Series: The Detroit Lakes Chamber of Commerce presents Dr. Kerry Petsinger, a high performance coach, professor and writer, who will empower you to create a routine of peak performances that brings results. World War II Author Presentation: Come to the Detroit Lakes Public Library for a free presentation featuring historical World War II author Paul Sailer, starting at 10:30 a.m. Sailer has been interested in WW II aviation history since childhood. He received a bacnehlor's degree in Social Studies (emphasis on American History) from Moorhead State College in 1969, and a pilot’s rating from the U.S. Army’s Advanced Flight School at Fort Rucker, Ala., in 1970. He flew UH-1 Huey and OH-58 Kiowa helicopters with the 20th Engineer Brigade in Vietnam in 1970 and 1971. He and his wife, Dianna, live on a tree farm in Wadena County. He was named 2012 Aviation Writer of the Year by the Minnesota Aviation Hall of Fame for "The Oranges are Sweet." Copies of that and his most recent book, "I Had a Comrade," will be available for sale during this event, with $5 from the proceeds of each book to be donated to the library.

Roses From Rotary: The Detroit Lakes Breakfast Rotary presents its 31st annual rose sale, Nov. 3-5 at three locations, Bergen's Greenhouses, DL Floral and North Shore Gas and Bait. Roses are still just $20 per dozen, while supplies last. Proceeds benefit area literacy, health and wellness projects.

Winter Gear Sale: The Detroit Mountain Ski Patrol's annual used winter gear sale and consignment sale will take place on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 29-30 at the Washington Square Mall in Detroit Lakes. Used winter gear, ski and snowboard equipment will be sold from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Drop off your donated or consignment gear at the mall between 4-8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 28 to be included in the sale.

Women's Health Weekend: The Adventist Community Center, 404 Richwood Road, Detroit Lakes will host a Women's Health Weekend on Oct. 29-30, with free community workshops and speakers hosted by Adventist Community Services. Events include a 2 p.m. mindfulness presentation on Saturday, Oct. 29, and a complimentary brunch buffet at 9 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 30, with the latter followed by a 9:45 a.m. presentation on simple and sustainable meal planning, and a holistic remedies practicum (with a special emphasis on immune health) at 10:45 a.m. Free and open to the public.

Worship Concert and Chili Cook-off: New Hope Church, 829 Lake Ave., Detroit Lakes, will host a 6:30 p.m. worship concert on Saturday, Oct. 29 with students from Apostolic Bible Institute, followed by a chili cook-off on Sunday, Oct. 30 at 11 a.m.

DMRA Job Fair: Detroit Mountain Recreation Area will host a job fair, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 22 and 4 to 7 p.m. Oct. 24 at the DMRA Lodge. Interviews can be scheduled in advance or on the spot; to sign up, go to detroitmountain.com .

Haunted House: The Becker County Museum is hosting its third-annual Halloween Haunted House, Oct. 22, 27, 28 and 29 at the county fairgrounds in Detroit Lakes (1310 Rossman Ave.). Not intended for younger children, this haunted house will bring participants an experience inspired by some of the classic Halloween thrillers. CineMagic Washington Square 7 will also provide a limited number of popcorn buckets be handed out each evening for you to refill at your next trip to the movies. Admission is $10 cash at the door. Children under age 13 must be accompanied by an adult. Costumes are permitted, but masks must be removed prior to entering the haunted house. Approximate length is 10 minutes, but groups can tour at their own pace.

Photography Exhibit: The Detroit Lakes Public Library is exhibiting "A Memory of Steel," featuring the photography of W. Scott Olsen, through the end of November. The exhibit is a collection of images taken at the abandoned Fargo Foundry at 92 N.P. Ave. in Fargo, the day before the building was destroyed by fire in 2021. Olsen is an English professor at Concordia College in Moorhead, as well as the author of 12 published nonfiction books in the narrative travel and adventure category. The library is located at 1000 Washington Ave.

Off the Wall Art Exhibit: Detroit Lakes artist Cathy Oehler is among those featured in the new "Off the Wall" dimensional art exhibit at the Lake Region Arts Council Gallery in Fergus Falls, which runs through Dec. 23. Other featured artists include Penny Kagigebi of White Earth Ojibwe, Rick Kagigebi of Lac Courte Oreille, Mary Jo Wentz of Battle Lake, Vicky Radel of Norcross, Jarod Marrow of Fergus Falls, Phyllis Joos of Hancock, Judy Christoffersen of Dent, Kae Homeman of Erhard, Kristi Kruder of Battle Lake, Dar Eckert of Fergus Falls, Timothy Cassidy of New York Mills, Mary Williams of Clitherall, Brian Christensen of Fergus Falls and Carl Zachmann of Fergus Falls. A public reception is set for Tuesday, Nov. 15 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., with refreshments provided; artist talks will start at 6 p.m. The gallery is located at 133 S. Mill St., Fergus Falls. Library Storytime: The Detroit Lakes Public Library offers weekly storytime sessions every Thursday at 10:30 a.m. Preschoolers and their caregivers are invited to join library staff for stories, flannel boards, finger plays, songs and more. This early literacy experience explores a different theme each week and is a way to encourage young children to enjoy reading; sometimes held outdoors during the summer months, weather permitting.
