Gigi Ni, Cole Bryant, Grant Fritch-Gallatin, Tate Kerzman, Rob Ivankovich, Caleb Tangen,Caleb McKenzie, Sarah Krengel, Daniel Heikes, Kamryn Pachel, Shelby Busker, Tanner Alger, Hope Hansen, Ashley Eikren, Chelsey Johnson and Marisa Pace, students at Detroit Lakes Middle School (DLMS), participated in the regional Math Masters of Minnesota Challenge at Horizon Middle School in Moorhead on March 14.
Students competed individually and as teams on eight sets of mathematical problems in this competition.
Detroit Lakes Red Team (Gigi Ni, Sarah Krengel, Shelby Busker, Chelsey Johnson and Marisa Pace) placed 3rd out of 11 teams.
Detroit Lakes Black Team (Tate Kerzman, Ashley Eikren, Caleb McKenzie, Daniel Heikes and Caleb Tangen) placed 5th.
Gigi placed first individually out of 51 competitors from Minnesota and North Dakota in her math facts test and placed 4th overall.

Shelby Busker placed 5th in her math facts.
Caleb Tangen placed fifth individually.
Math Masters of Minnesota began as a fifth grade competition program in 1989, with teams from 44 schools taking part. In 1995, the competition was expanded to include sixth graders and this year there are approximately 5,000 fifth and sixth grade students registered to compete.
Math Masters is designed to promote excellence in critical thinking skills and problem-solving abilities as well as provide recognition to students for academic effort and achievement.
