Though most of the state is closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the annual Dollars for Scholars ceremony will go on -- this year as a virtual celebration.
Winning Detroit Lakes High School seniors will hear their scholarships awarded live at 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 27, on KDLM 1340 AM or 93.1 FM, or streaming at leightonbroadcasting.com/locations/detroit-lakes.
This year, Detroit Lakes Dollars for Scholars will award a record $271,000 to Detroit Lakes High School seniors, according to a news release.
“The support of the community is just remarkable," Tom Seaworth of Detroit Lakes Dollars for Scholars said in a news release. "We’re incredibly fortunate to live in a very special place; a place where our DHLS scholarship winners should be proud to always call ‘home’.”
Detroit Lakes Dollars for Scholars is a nonprofit foundation that supports academic success in the community, according to the release. As part of Scholarship America's national network of locally based, volunteer-driven Dollars for Scholars chapters, its mission is to mobilize the community on behalf of postsecondary education success for local students.
“While it is a shame that we won’t be able to get together and celebrate as a community, we’re so fortunate to have Leighton Broadcasting to cover this event,” Seaworth said. “Likewise, we’d like to extend our appreciation to the Detroit Lakes Tribune for their incredible support. Having these great media partners in this environment is such a blessing, and their generosity is so appreciated.”
