Polar Fest opening, palace lighting delayed until Saturday, Feb. 12

The Grand Lighting Ceremony that was expected to kick off Polar Fest 2022 on Friday, Feb. 11 has been postponed until Saturday, Feb. 12. Several other Polar Fest events scheduled for Friday have also been delayed due to the weather.

All Polar Fest events scheduled for the evening of Friday, Feb. 11 have been moved to Saturday, Feb. 12, though there will still be a "soft opening" of the Ice Palace tonight at 7 p.m.

The Ice Palace grand lighting and fireworks ceremony set for tonight (Friday, Feb. 11) near the Pavilion in Detroit Lakes has been moved to Saturday, Feb. 12, due to travel advisories and bad weather.

“Mother Nature tossed us a snowball of a blizzard today!,” organizers said on the Ice Harvest DL Facebook page.

With travel not advised, “we are moving the Grand Lighting to tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 12th at 7 p.m.,” the post continued. “We are going to do a soft opening and lighting of the palace tonight (Friday, Feb. 11) at 7 p.m., so if you’re in town, feel free to swing by and check it out."

Here’s the new schedule for Saturday, Feb 12:

Noon – 9 p.m. – Pavilion open with Becker County Museum ice history info, merchandise, and more! Ice maze and Polarty Poem Walk open all day in City Park.


6 p.m. – Fandazzi Fire Circus in the City Park

6:45 p.m. – Outdoor program and announcements

6:45 p.m. – Hub 41 VIP Private Sponsor Party – sponsors may gather to watch the lighting and fireworks upstairs at Hub 41.

7 p.m. – Grand Lighting and fireworks.

7 p.m. to 9 p.m. – VIP Sponsor Party at Hub 41, upstairs.

9 p.m. – Fandazzi Fire Circus in the City Park

“Stay safe and warm. We hope you can join us Saturday night.”

Other events also delayed or canceled by weather

Two other Polar Fest events scheduled for this weekend were also canceled or postponed, per the Detroit Lakes Polar Fest Facebook page.


The Ice Tee Golf event set to get underway at 1 p.m. on Friday at the Holiday Inn was canceled, though discussions are underway to reschedule it.

And the Preschool Polar Fest Icy Adventures set to be held at 10 a.m. Friday morning have been rescheduled for 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 15.

One other event scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, the Freeze Your Buns Run, has been moved to Saturday, Feb. 19.
