When the Detroit Lakes Shrine Club was forced to cancel the annual visit of the El Zagal Shrine Circus to the community on March 26, due to coronavirus concerns, the club was left with over 50 bicycles donated by area businesses that were scheduled to be given away during the event.
"We made a plan to hold two separate bike giveaways — one in Pelican Rapids, and one in Detroit Lakes," said Shriner Steve Larson, who lives in the community and works as a realtor. "The Pelican Rapids event will be this Friday from 5:30 to 7 p.m., and the Detroit Lakes event will be Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
"The area schools drew names of kids in the various communities that support our circus, and have sent those kids an invite to this weekend's events. We are also inviting the sponsors in hopes that they can see the kids get the bikes, and even take a picture with the bike they sponsored. We will have hot dogs and treats for the kids, and hope to have a fun time in both communities."
The Detroit Lakes event on Saturday will take place in the parking lot behind the Shrine Club at 517 Washington Ave.
