DETROIT LAKES — The United Way of Becker County partners with 32 agencies and organizations across the county to provide a variety of essential services each year, and all of them are showcased in its annual Community Celebration, which gets underway this Thursday, Sept. 22 at the Detroit Lakes Pavilion.

From 4:30-6:30 p.m., area residents are invited to not only come and view all 32 booths spotlighting the United Way's partner organizations, but also to enjoy a free meal, a variety of inflatable games and family-friendly activities.

Activities at the event include face painting and a display of "hero vehicles" from the Detroit Lakes fire and police departments, emergency medical and rescue services and more — as well as a free bike giveaway.

"We're giving away 13 bikes," says Alyssa Hagedorn, a United Way board member and chair of this year's celebration. "But we're doing it a little differently."

Instead of just signing up for a raffle drawing, participants will be asked to visit about a half-dozen of the booths and activities offered at the celebration for a chance to win one of the bikes.

"We wanted to make it more interactive," Hagedorn explained. "It's a great way to highlight our partner programs. ... They're all different and serve a unique purpose in our community."

Since its beginnings in 1983, the United Way of Becker County has raised over $6.4 million for its partner agencies and programs, Hagedorn said, noting that 99 cents of every dollar raised stays in the county to support local services offered through the United Way.

She added that the celebration is also the United Way's kickoff to its annual fundraising campaign, which has a theme of "Kindness Takes Flight."
