Hilda Hanebuth

Former Detroit Lakes resident Hilda M. Hanebuth, 94, of Sauk Rapids, Minn., died Monday, June 29, 2009 at the St. Cloud Hospital.

Hilda was born to Henry and Sophia Bartels on Sept. 26, 1914 in Ottertail. She was baptized on Oct. 11, 1914 at St. John's Lutheran Church, near Ottertail. Hilda attended public school in Ottertail for two years, then continued at St. John's Lutheran School through the eighth grade. She attended high school at Dr. Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minn., and graduated from there in June 1932.

On June 17, 1944, Hilda married Edwin Wiebe. They farmed near Dent until ill health forced Edwin to leave the farm. They moved to Detroit Lakes in 1965. Edwin died in 1968. On Jan. 16, 1971, Hilda married John "Jack" Hanebuth. John died in 1981. Hilda was employed at Zion Lutheran Church, Detroit Lakes, as office manager for 14 years, and then on a part time basis for five years.

She participated in church activities as well as volunteering at St. Mary's Hospital and Nursing Center with the Pastoral Care Group. Hilda moved to

Sauk Rapids in 2002, and became a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in St. Cloud, Minn.

A warm and loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, Hilda had a very strong faith and was dedicated to the churches to which she belonged. She knew where she was going when she passed on to the next life, and viewed death as a very spiritual experience.

Surviving Hilda are her sons and daughters, Stan (JeNell Jacobson) Wiebe of

Plymouth, Minn., Virginia (Don) Duel of St. Cloud, Lyle (Mary) Wiebe of Brandon, Minn., Harry Wiebe of Denver, Colo., and Sylvia Wiebe of St. Louis Park, Minn.; sister, Amanda Peterson of Minnetonka, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; a stepdaughter and stepsons, Janice (Bob) Sonnenberg of Detroit Lakes, Allyn "Butch" (Mary) Hanebuth of Osage and James (Sandra) Hanebuth of Detroit Lakes; as well as several step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren; and former daughter-in-law, Cheryl Wiebe of Fargo.

Preceding Hilda in death were her parents; husbands, Edwin Wiebe (Sept. 29, 1968) and John Hanebuth (April 28, 1981); four sisters, Ida, Erna, Minnie and Louise; and five brothers, Fritz, Adolph, Hank, Herb and Bill.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday, July 2, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, St. Cloud. There will be visitation for one hour prior to the start of services at the church.

Graveside services will take place at 2 p.m. Friday, July 3 in Oak Grove Cemetery, Detroit Lakes.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Benson Funeral Home in St. Cloud.

Memorials are preferred sent to Holy Cross Lutheran Church or Good Shepherd Lutheran Home.
