Detroit Lakes girls win WCA meet at Tipsinah, boys take third

Results from Detroit Lakes cross country at the West Central Area invite.

Detroit Lakes’ Julia Steff and Isla Pender put up impressive times on Tuesday afternoon to lead the Lakers to a first-place finish at Tipsinah.

Steffl (20:40) and Pender (20:44) took third and fourth to pace the Lakers as the fastest team at the West Central Area invite. The Lakers finished with a team score of 43, edging out the host school by two points.

Sadie Johnson took sixth with a time of 21:49, while Karlie Skarie finished in 15th place (26:16). Lilly Baethke rounded out the top five Lakers in 17th place with a time of 23:36.

Detroit Lakes’ performance followed a second-place finish at the Mid-State Conference meet last Thursday. The Lakers finished behind Staples-Motley (34) with 73 team points, which was good enough to beat Park Rapids by six.

Pender took sixth place with a time of 20:34. Steffl was seven seconds behind in eighth place, while Johnson raced to ninth (20:58). Skarie (22:55) and Baethke (23:07) took 27th and 31st.

Boys take third at WCA.

The Detroit Lakes boys team missed a second-place finish by one point at Tipsinah. Breckenridge-Wahpeton totaled 61 points to the Lakers’ 62. West Central Area cruised to a first-place finish with 19 points.

Cole Weber took sixth place with a time of 18:18. The next fastest Laker was Francis Braydon in 11th at 19:10. Casey Parks (19:55), Joe Skinner (10:22) and Micah Barberg (20:24) took 16h, 17th and 18th place, respectively.

At Mid-State, Weber paced the Lakers again to a 14th-place finish in 18:21. Francis took 17th with a time of 18:46, while Parks (20:14), Barberg (20:23) and Skinner (21:05) completed the Detroit Lakes top five. Xander Jessen (21:10) took 31st and 32nd.

The Lakers took fourth in their conference meet with 114 points. Park Rapids Area (39), Staples-Motley (42) and Pequot Lakes (45) earned the top three team scores.
