The Detroit Lakes girls cross country team placed third and the boys fourth overall at the Mid-State Conference championships at Ruttger’s Bay Lake Lodge in Deerword Tuesday, Oct. 6.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the race featured two pods with Staples-Motley, Detroit Lakes and Long Prairie-Grey Eagle racing in the early afternoon, and Park Rapids, Pequot Lakes and Crosby-Ironton racing in the late afternoon.
Pequot Lakes freshman Calia Chaney entered the late afternoon race needing to beat the time of 19:09.5 set by Caroline Kuehne of LP-GE. Chaney crossed the finish line in 18:58.3 giving her first place. Chaney has won every race she has entered this season.
Staples-Motley swept both team competitions clinching conference titles for the third consecutive season.

Laker runners were held out of the top 10. Senior Katie McConkey led DL with a 12th place finish overall (22:49.5) in a pack with eighth-grade teammates Sadie Johnson (13th - 23:05) and Isla Pender (14th - 23:09.4). Sophomore Julia Steffl (23:38.2) placed 18th and eighth-grader Karli Skarie (24:32.4) was 22nd.
DL scored 79 points to finish third. The Cardinals won with 29; Pequot Lakes was second with 47 points.
In the boy’s race, Staples-Motley’s Emmet Anderson (16:19.3) continued his dominance finishing 80 seconds in front of runner-up Jesse Clausen of Pequot Lakes and the rest of the pack.
Anderson’s Cardinals won the team title by 30 places scoring 24 to 54 from Park Rapids. Pequot Lakes placed third with 73, Detroit Lakes was fourth scoring 92.
DL senior John Bergum clipped the 19-minute mark to lead the team in 15th place (18:58.4). Junior Clint Andresen (19:04.9) was next to finish in 16th, followed by senior Ryan Bergum (19th - 19:17), junior Cole Weber (20th - 19:29.6) and junior Casey Parks (22nd - 20:01.1).
