Classes at all Detroit Lakes Public Schools started this past Wednesday, Aug. 28 — which means for students in the district, those first-day-of-school butterflies have flitted away for another year. But for other Becker County students, the fun and excitement of a new school year still lies ahead.

It’s a brand new year, with new opportunities, new friends to make, and new dreams to chase, so go out there and have fun while you learn. The staff at the Detroit Lakes Public Library hopes everyone has a great school year!

Here are a few selections from our stacks to help keep that back-to-school spirit alive.

“The Secret Life of Squirrels: Back to School!” by Nancy Rose. Mr. Peanuts' teacher friend Rosie needs help preparing for the first day of school! The two squirrels go shopping for school supplies, set up the library and music corners, bring all the sports equipment out to the blacktop, and decorate the classroom. Mr. Peanuts even practices driving the school bus! But it's not easy to be a teacher getting ready for a whole classroom of new faces. Will Mr. Peanuts and Rosie be able to pull together the room before the end of summer?

“The Principal Strikes Back,” by Jarrett J. Krosozka. As told through a mix of comics, doodles, and journal entries, it's Victor Starspeeder's third year at Jedi Academy! It's also his first year EVER without his sister, Christina. Plus, things at Jedi Academy are... weird. After last year's security breach, Principal Marr has been demoted and replaced with Commander ZC-04, a big, scary droid. There's a curfew, new regulations, and everyone is on edge. But when Victor and his friends dig a little deeper into the changes at the school, they find that there's a lot more to this story than the droids want to admit! It's an all-new, out-of-this-world Jedi Academy adventure as The Principal Strikes Back!
