The Lakes Area Chorale is seeking singers for its 2020 season, no experience necessary.
With a musical theme of “Rock ‘n’ Soul Meets Gospel,” this year’s concert lineup will feature a unique mix of about 15 well-known spiritual, Motown, soul and classic rock favorites, ranging from the children’s gospel classic, “This Little Light of Mine,” to the iconic Queen anthem, “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
Under the fun and energetic leadership of Director Barbara Schramm for the second year in a row, the Lakes Area Chorale will perform two spring concerts for the public — one at the Historic Holmes Theatre in Detroit Lakes on Friday, April 24, and another at Life Church in Fergus Falls on Sunday, April 26.
The local classic rock group, “Fat Cats,” will join the chorale on several songs, and children’s choirs from Lake Park and Fergus Falls will also perform.
Mary Sundby, a Lakes Area Chorale board member, said it was the involvement of the “Fat Cats” that partly inspired this year’s “Rock ‘n’ Soul Meets Gospel” theme.
“Fat Cats” member Doug Newman sang with the chorale last year, she said; this year, he and the board “decided it would be really fun to collaborate and have our choir and his band do some music together. And since they’re all about rock ‘n’ roll, we thought we would mix it up and include that in our concert.”
The decision to mix in some Gospel, Motown and soul came from suggestions by chorale members, “plus it blends in really nicely, because a lot of the roots of rock ‘n’ roll come from Gospel,” Sundby explained.
There were about 50 members in this longstanding Detroit Lakes area community choir last year, and this year the board would like to have even more. All experience levels are welcome, from beginners to polished concert performers. There is no formal audition process to join, and a $25 membership fee covers the cost of any needed sheet music (scholarships are available).
Rehearsals will be held at First Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes every Sunday from January 5 through April 19, from 1-3 p.m., with a dress rehearsal on Thursday, April 23 from 6-10 p.m.
