NYM's Cultural Center hosts selfie exhibit; reception, artist talk, awards set for Thursday

The cultural center in New York Mills is hosting a "Best of the Selfies" photography exhibit.

The Cultural Center's current gallery exhibition, titled "Best Of The Selfies," will be highlighted at a reception this Thursday, Sept. 1 from 5 to 7 p.m. Artists highlighted in the exhibition include Brianna Steinbrink of Roseau and Maxine Adams of Fergus Falls, as well as a group of nearly 20 individuals who entered selfies by e-mail submission and were selected by a jury from Cyber Café in Wadena. Any artists present at the reception will be welcome to address the crowd at 6:30 p.m. Following the artists' talks, the award for Best Selfie in Show will be given and a golden selfie stick will be awarded to one talented selfie-taker. The Best Of The Selfies Show takes on the question, "is this new media, which emerges from technological growth and the diversification of creative expression, real art?" The lines between artist, subject, participant, and viewer blur in this new device-driven paradigm. The hope is that this question will be further explored throughout the exhibition, which is free to see, and in the gallery through Saturday, Sept. 3. The reception on Thursday is also free to attend, and all are welcome. Light refreshments will be served.
