Finnish folk band performing for St. Urho's Day in Menahga

MENAHGA — Laulu Aika, a group of musicians with a passion for learning to play and sing Finnish folk tunes, will be providing the entertainment for the Menahga Civic & Commerce Association's St. Urho Days kickoff program on Friday, March 15, located in the large gym of the Menahga Public School. Festivities begin at 6 p.m., and will include the crowning of the 2019 St. Urho Days King and Queen.

Laulu Aika is based in the Twin Cities area. The formation of this group of musicians was made possible by a 2015 grant from the Finlandia Foundation National.

A variety of other events are set to take place in the area this weekend. Here is a brief sampling of the entertainment that's in store for Detroit Lakes area residents.

Spring Crafts Day at the Museum this Friday

DETROIT LAKES — Since local schools have the day off, kids of all ages are welcome to come in to the Becker County Museum (714 Summit Ave., Detroit Lakes) between 10 a.m.-12 p.m. this Friday, March 15 and create a variety of spring-themed craft projects, ranging in price from $1-$5.

Once they have completed all their craft-making projects, kids and adults are invited to explore all the museum's latest exhibits before heading home for the afternoon.

St. Patrick's Pub Crawl set for Saturday in Detroit Lakes

DETROIT LAKES — Celebrate St. Patrick's Day a little early by participating in an old-fashioned pub crawl through Detroit Lakes on Saturday, March 16.

Stop by Hub 41 starting at 3 p.m. and pick up your passport (punch card), then venture out to each of the other participating pubs — Detroit Mountain, Northside, Brygge, Roasted, Lakeside, Zorbaz and the American Legion Club — to enjoy St. Paddy's Day specials and get registered for some unique prizes to be given away at each location. When you've visited them all, bring your completed passport to Hub 41 and claim a special prize.

Also, enjoy some live music featuring local favorite Matt Aakre at Detroit Mountain, starting at 3 p.m., and The Haymakers at Hub 41 starting at 8 p.m.

If you wish to extend your evening's entertainment, other live music performers scheduled for Saturday around the lakes area include Pat Lenertz and Dan Thornby at the Long Bridge Bar, Grill & Marina, starting at 6 p.m.; and Face for Radio at the Holiday Inn Beach Bar & Grill, starting at 9 p.m.

NYM to host St. Urho's Day concert on Saturday

NEW YORK MILLS — Brothers Kip and Eric Peltoniemi will perform a special St. Urho's Day concert this Saturday, March 16 at the Cultural Center in New York Mills.

Kip and Eric Peltoniemi's long relationship with folk, country, Finnish and Nordic music began in Wadena in the early 1960s, when as a teenagers they began performing at county fairs, dances, and township halls... and even boxing matches.

In their college years they went on to perform at folk festivals, Twin Cities coffeehouses and regional clubs and resorts. They soon developed a repartee and talents for mixing entertaining comedy with hot instrumentals and more serious music. They perform both interpretations of classic and rare music as well as their acclaimed original music.

Tickets for Saturday's concert are are $12 in advance or $15 at the door (Cultural Center members get a $2 discount); student admission is always $5. Those who wear purple to show their St. Urho's Day pride will get $1 taken off their admission price at the door. Complimentary snacks and cash bar available. Murder mystery dinner this Saturday in Detroit Lakes

DETROIT LAKES — The Lodge on Lake Detroit will host a Murder Mystery Dinner this Saturday, March 16.

Guests will have the opportunity to figure out "whodunnit" and bring the killer to justice, all within the course of a single evening. Get ready for a night of mystery and mayhem; his will be an event you won't forget... if you live to tell about it!
