Auditions for DLHS fall musical, 'Mary Poppins,' set Sept. 4-8

"Mary Poppins," the supercalifragilisticexpialidocious musical adventure, is set to fly onto the Detroit Lakes Middle School George Simson Auditorium stage starting Thursday, Nov. 1, with additional performances set for Nov. 3, 4, 8 and 10.

Presented by Detroit Lakes Public Schools, "Mary Poppins" is the well-known, beloved story based on the books by P.L. Travers and the classic Walt Disney film. Disney and Cameron Mackintosh's Broadway production of "Mary Poppins" delighted Broadway audiences for over 2,500 performances and received 44 major theatre awards from around the globe.

Auditions for "Mary Poppins" will be held from Tuesday, Sept. 4 through Saturday, Sept. 8 and are open to Detroit Lakes students in grades 5-12. Auditions are comprised of three components — singing, acting and dancing. All three components must be completed for a student to be considered eligible for the cast of "Mary Poppins."

The story is familiar to fans of the 1964 Disney film: Jack-of-all trades, Bert, introduces the audience to England in 1910, and the troubled Banks family. Young Jane and Michael have sent many a nanny packing before Mary Poppins arrives on their doorstep. Using a combination of magic and common sense, she must teach the family how to value each other again. Mary Poppins takes the children on many magical and memorable adventures, but Jane and Michael aren't the only ones she has a profound effect upon. Even grown-ups can learn a lesson or two from the nanny who advises that, "Anything can happen if you let it."

"Mary Poppins" is an enchanting mixture of irresistible story, unforgettable songs, such as "Chim Chim Chre-ee," "Jolly Holiday," "A Spoonful of Sugar," "Feed the Birds," "Let's Go Fly a Kite" and"Step in Time"; wonderful dance numbers; and magical things happening on stage! MARY POPPINS promises to be "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" and fabulous fun for the whole family!
