Laker boys XC 11th at sections

The Detroit Lakes boys cross country team wrapped up the season with an 11th place finish at the Section 8AA championship in Bemidji Thursday. Robert Williams / Tribune

Detroit Lakes placed 11th overall in the 15-team Section 8AA Cross Country Championship Thursday, Oct. 15 at Greenwood Golf Course in Bemidji.

The Lakers scored 337 points finishing in front of Fergus Falls, Foley, St. Cloud Tech and Moorhead.

The host Lumberjacks defeated Alexandria by 11 points scoring 53 to the Cardinals’ 64. In a non-pandemic year, the top two teams would be advancing to the state meet, which is not being held at St. Olaf this season.

Bemidji senior Nathan Alto was the section medalist running a winning time of 16:29.3. He crossed the finish with a 15-second margin over runner-up Sam Brewer of St. Cloud Apollo.

The Lakers scoring quintet was made up of three juniors and two seniors.

Senior John Bergum led the DL pack with a 50th place overall finish in 18:40.5. Junior Cole Weber was 61st (19:02.7), followed by senior Ryan Bergum in 63rd (19:03.3) and juniors Clint Andresen 65th (19:04.9) and Casey Parks 98th (20:15.1) in a field of 105 runners.

As a team, DL averaged a finishing time of 19:13.3.
