Calling all aspiring thespians in grades 5-12: Auditions for this summer's theater camp production of "Matilda Jr." will take place this Saturday, May 22 and Monday, May 24 at Detroit Lakes' Historic Holmes Theatre (806 Summit Ave.).
Audition sessions will take place from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday and 5-7 p.m. on Monday. Participants will be expected to sign up for theater camp at the Holmes, which will run June 1-23 from 1 to 5 p.m. daily. Performance dates are June 24-26. South Shore Park open house, groundbreaking is Wednesday
Detroit Lakes' new South Shore Park will host an open house from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 19, with a groundbreaking ceremony for its new playground and multi-use courts starting at 4:30 p.m.
The DL Ice Cream Truck and Wood Fire Pizza will be on-site for food purchases during the event as well. South Shore Park is 5.5 acres of green space on Detroit Lake's South Shore, featuring a shelter with bathroom facilities, picnic tables, paved trails and more. Construction planned for this summer includes a handicap-accessible playground on a rubberized surface and a multi-court for pickleball, tennis and basketball.

Detroit Lakes' Festival of Birds opens Thursday
The Festival of Birds returns to Detroit Lakes this Thursday, May 20 and continues through Saturday, May 22.
Field trips are planned to the Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge, Felton Prairie and Hamden Slough, and a variety of virtual presentations will be hosted by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce, which sponsors the annual event.

The return of Food Truck Fridays
Last summer's Food Truck Fridays, hosted by the Detroit Lakes Noon Rotary Club, were such a big hit that the weekly event will be returning to the Detroit Lakes City Park this Friday, May 21.
Every Friday from then until Sept. 3, a variety of local food trucks will gather in the parking lot at the City Park and serve up summer food favorites from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. There is no admission fee, but cost of food will vary.
