Sunny summer skies call for a picnic!
Did you know that picnics developed from medieval hunting feasts and Renaissance country banquets held outside by the wealthy?
July is National Picnic Month, so come into your library and check out books such as those below to learn a little more about it.

Detroit Lakes Public Library cordially invites area kids, teens and families to “Dig Into Reading” this summer at the library.

Now through Friday, Aug. 2: “Sizzlin’ Summer Reads” Adult Reading Program. To be eligible for the prize drawings, read or listen to 4 books, fill out the reading log and place it in the entry box. Entries may also be e-mailed to the library. There is no limit to the number of entries any person can make. This program is for adults age 18 and older.
- Thursday, July 4: The library will be closed in observance of Independence Day.
- Saturday, July 6: Preschool Storytime, 10:30 a.m.
- Saturday, July 6: Totally Teen Advisory Council, 11:30 a.m. Join us to brainstorm for future programs!
- Tuesday, July 9: “eReader Help,” 10:30 a.m. Schedule a one-on-one appointment to address your eReader questions.
- Wednesday, July 10: “eReader Help,” 4:30 p.m. Schedule a one-on-one appointment to address your eReader questions.
- Thursday, July 11 and Saturday, July 13: Preschool Storytime, 10:30 a.m. Theme related stories, fingerplays and a simple craft are all part of the fun.
- Thursday, July 11: Summer Reading Program-“Digging for Dinos,” 2 p.m. Archaeologist Robb Larson will bring artifacts and talk about digging for bones (and other things.) There will be some hands on activity and door prizes.

Library hours
The Detroit Lakes Library, located at 1000 Washington Ave., is open Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays.
It is closed on Sundays.
