'Hoedown to Heaven' at Calvary Lutheran

Calvary Lutheran Church in Perham, as part of its 50th year Jubilee, will sponsor "Hoedown to Heaven," a community wide, family celebration, this Saturday, July 24, from 4 to 7 p.m.

Calvary Lutheran Church in Perham, as part of its 50th year Jubilee, will sponsor "Hoedown to Heaven," a community wide, family celebration, this Saturday, July 24, from 4 to 7 p.m.

The hoedown will feature old-fashioned, country-style fun including: a turkey sandwich picnic dinner, Calvary artisans festival and art sale, basket social silent auction, bingo, face painting, tug of war, watermelon seed spitting contest, three-legged race, straw dig for coins and a piñata.

A 6 p.m. family concert features the Great Adventure Gospel Band with its blend of gospel bluegrass, Southern gospel, a capella and traditional hymns. This family band from Braham, Minn., which consists of David and Kris Garms and seven of their children, ages 6-18, has appeared at the Minnesota State Fair.

All Saturday events are free of charge, though a free will donation is appreciated.

The Jubilee Celebration worship services on Sunday, July 25 will take place at 8:30 and 10:45 a.m. The services will feature a reunion choir, and past Calvary pastor, Rev. Bill Reck, will preach and present the between-service forum.

The celebration dinner, starting at noon, will highlight Calvary's history, with former pastor Dick Kennedy serving as master of ceremonies.

Tickets for Sunday's celebration dinner are $10 and should be purchased in advance at the church, located at 619 Third Ave. SW in Perham.
