Do you know who the first U. S. figure skating superstar was?

You have to go way back before Scott Hamilton, Dorothy Hamill, or Peggy Fleming to a fourteen year old in 1927. She was the winner of 10 consecutive world championships, and set a record that hasn’t been broken while winning three gold medals at the Olympics; her name is Sonja Henie!

It’s a snowy day, perfect for ice-skating! Henry sees lots of amazing vehicles on his way to the rink, but the best vehicle of the day is around the corner.

“Boy on Ice: The Life and Death of Derek Boogaard,” by John Branch.

The tragic death of hockey star Derek Boogaard at 28 was front-page news across the country in 2011 and helped shatter the silence about violence and concussions in professional sports.

Now, in a gripping work of narrative nonfiction, acclaimed reporter Branch tells the shocking story of Boogaard’s life and heartbreaking death.

“Boy on Ice” is the richly told story of a mountain of a man who made it to the absolute pinnacle of his sport. Widely regarded as the toughest man in the NHL, Boogaard was a gentle man off the ice but a merciless fighter on it.

Library Happenings

Library Club meets the fourth Tuesday of the month (August-October and January-April) in the afternoons at 2 p.m.

Membership is open to anyone interested in the Library and interesting programs. Dues are $3 per year or a lifetime membership is $50.

January’s featured speaker is Nathan Jorgenson, author of “A Crooked Number,” and “Waiting for White Horses,” among other books.

“Food For Fines” continues until Jan. 31. Bring your overdue library material back with an unexpired, non-perishable food item and we’ll erase your late fee. One food item equals a $2 fine waived. (Not valid for lost items or replacement charges.) All food items will be gifted to local food banks.

Mark your calendars for a special event coming up on Feb. 9: Lonnie Dupre, mountaineer and arctic explorer, will be visiting Detroit Lakes!

Dupre set a world record on Jan. 11, becoming the first to summit Denali - also known as Alaska’s Mount McKinley - in January, alone. He will share stories of his arctic expeditions and environmental activism. This event presented by the Detroit Lakes Public Library and will be held at the Historic Holmes Theatre at 7 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public, sponsored by the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
